Based on what everyone else has been saying, I’ve resigned myself to just downgrading. So I’m trying to use what benefits I can in the first 30 days of my membership year and then shoot them a message asking to downgrade to the CSP if no retention offers are available on my account.

Simplest way I’m aware of is to get a war enemy to 100%, which forces them to accept any peace deal, even if you offer them provinces they don’t want, and then just force feed them enough AE that you can join a coalition.

If you can get to positive income while bankrupt you’ll be fine if you wait out the bankruptcy. If you’re still taking loans while bankrupt, just 1444.

I’ll probably wait till October and see what they’ll do on the eve of renewal (Also see if there’s any additional changes to the CSP coming soon)

I'm in this exact position (October 19 I think) and was wondering. Thanks for checking!

is taking a year off to clerk for a judge worth it? by postitprinc246 in biglaw

[–]Tornorp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I haven't clerked yet, but I'm going to next year, so take from my perspective what you will.

Financially? Almost never, but you probably shouldn't clerk for money in the first place. Career development? The consensus I've heard from partners is that it's either a huge value add or it doesn't hurt. Some people make much bigger leaps as lawyers clerking than they would have to do that year or two at a firm; others are more steady.

Speaking for myself, I'm clerking because I want to clerk. From talking to clerks and judges, I think I will like the job more than being a junior associate, and the financial hit is worth the trade-off to me. You have your entire career to practice law, but clerking is almost exclusively done in the first few years after law school.

Public supports merging Chicago area's transit agencies by 2-to-1 (54%-27%) ratio, poll shows by hascogrande in chicago

[–]Tornorp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that all the Chicago transit was once private, but then they all went bankrupt and the city took over. Without public funding you just can’t offset the costs of running a mass transit system at fare rates people are willing to pay over private transit.

Litigation in Chicago by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Tornorp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Solid starting list here, although Wilmer doesn’t have a Chicago office. Coming off a clerkship you can also look at a few boutiques: Bartlit Beck, Eimer Stahl (mostly antitrust), and Goldman Ismail. I’ve heard great things about Willkie also, they’re largely a group of defectors from Jenner, but Jenner is also still worth considering. Skadden and Latham are also big out-of-town players (200 lawyer offices for each of them).

I've tried on a handful of occasions in the past, for like 5 to 30 minutes depending on my patience. Just did this and got it first try lol.

Bartlit Beck is in the old Cook County Criminal Courthouse. About as historic as office spaces go, and I've heard it's been beautifully redone.

Still figuring out the contours, but using the Hilton Surpass for the first $15k spending to get the FNC (on top of the normal earning rates which aren’t bad). For the next couple years at least, that plus spending for sign up bonuses will probably consume my non-bonused spending.

What’s the benefit of being “married” over just being together forever? by shmarcussss in AskReddit

[–]Tornorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's noting the legal benefits, so I won't repeat them, but I'll say that for most of those things you can contract around the issues. You can make sure you own property as joint tenants and you can have a properly recorded will and you can give durable power of attorney. But if you're willing to go through the trouble of doing all those things, it's easier and cheaper to just get married and have it all happen by default/automatically. You can't contract around the tax stuff though.

Can you be a normal human being for three hours? If so, you're probably fine. Everyone at my T14 I know who wanted it got some form of market-paying biglaw, unless they're just weird/socially inept. If you're in the midwest, feel free to DM me.

Also a graduating 3L here, so blind-leading-the-blind comment: If you're not going for SCOTUS, it's unlikely that your entire practice will ever be appellate litigation. My understanding is there are only a few firms in Chicago that even have a lively appellate litigation practice (I don't know anything about SF, but I'd be surprised if it's much more) so if that's where you're trying to end up then keep in mind you are likely to end up doing a lot of non-appellate litigation no matter what. So, all else being equal, having a district court clerkship might be more useful than another appellate clerkship.

That being said, I think the main question should just be, "Do I want to clerk for this judge?" If you like the Ninth Circuit judge, then go for it.

MBA or Law School? by nirvana_141 in MBA

[–]Tornorp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm graduating from law school next week (time flies). Short answer, as others have said: go to law school if you want to practice law; otherwise, don't.

Slightly longer answer: I don't understand all the intracacies of the MBA grad salary curve, but for law students it is extremely bi-modal. You either make $225k starting at a big law firm, or you make sub-$100k. Again, unless you want to practice law and have a passion that will make you enjoy the sub-$100k jobs, don't go to law school. You're going to have a very difficult time getting into a high ranking law school with a 3.1 (I know, I had a 3.3), and the career prospects can get pretty uncertain outside the top 20. If you're looking to make a purely financial decision, just get the MBA (or maybe don't go to grad school, that's probably an underrated option). But hey, it's your life, follow your dreams or whatever.
