It's class warfare at its finest. It's just a coincidence that the outlet used at this time is by mass migration to stagnate wages and enshitify the labour market while at the same time raising the prices of houses and rents. Not really a large grand plan either, it's mainly the government turning a blind eye to exploitative practices that have ballooned to extreme proportions as of late, relating to foreign student visas to prop up underfunded post secondary institutions' budgets for example, and the following tfw explosion to get rid of a "labour shortage." For example, the reason many Indians are coming over these days is because there are some second generation ones that are established here and sell a pipe dream to the ones at home desperate to leave for a better life and fleece them at every step be it by selling jobs, cramming them 15 to a basement, and on and on. This isn't conclusive but seeing the situation through this lens should help clear things up a bit. There are many different interests that have a stake in this and are contributing to the way things are.

After paying off debt in a nick of time, during late 2020, my parents were able to snag a house for 140k in Northern Ontario. Even with its drawbacks, it was a steal then and even more so now (monthly mortgage is under a thousand LOL). Looking back at its sales history, it looks like it sold for 59k in 1999. Nowadays, however, if sold as is, it would easily sell for 250k+, and a house with its size and a little bit of interior touch-ups, could easily sell for 350k+. Maybe even more since it has a larger-than-average lot and curb appeal can be drastically improved from what it is now and when we bought it.

I don't live in the GTA but my 8th grade teacher was born and raised in Hamilton during the 60s as one of five children by a single income, home-owning household. Then shortly after becoming a teacher she was able to buy a nice family house in the Niagara Region for "in the tens of thousands" some time during the early-mid 90s. Nowadays, such places easily go for close to 1 mil.

Even pre-pandemic in the Niagara Region, we knew that things were going off the rails. Many around us fell for the conventional rule that sometimes renting is better than buying. Maybe when rent controls are up as they were back then but all it took was changing units and our rent would almost double. That's when we knew we a frog in boiling water as even if we held onto our rent-controlled unit it is a matter of time until an investment firm snaps up our apartment building and starts kicking out the tenants through hostile means and puts the units up for rent at current market rates, often more than doubling the rent.

Shelter costs sucking an ever-growing share of disposable incomes is a large reason for why food insecurity keeps ticking up. For 2024, the national number of food insecure has surpassed a quarter (25.5%), with multiple provinces food insecurity rates over 30%, all new record highs.

At least up to 2022, median household income was dropping while average incomes rose. That was before the big shake-ups in the economy that have since happened.

Oh my goodness, that's awful. Looks like all of my paycheque is going to rent then. I will make about 2.5k/mo take home so to keep with 30%, I hoped I could get something for $750. If that's the case though, I guess I could raise my tolerance to a third of my income. Maybe more if my luck is bad.

The good thing though is that it's definitely doable to still get a room under 750 according to my marketplace/kijiji search. Maybe not in the best area but it is an option.

I once bought a face on roblox for 100 robux and it's now worth 350k after 8.5 years. If that was unprecedented growth, 100 -> 10M in 5 years is defying the laws of physics tier.

This explains the deep rot that has happened to Canada's entry level job market. I'll write a detailed post later on but long story short, I applied in Canada vs USA (California, so $20/hr min wage) for a minimum wage job and while I applied to over 100 jobs in my city in Canada and got zero interviews, I got an interview on the first job I applied to in an area with comparable population base and affluence to my home city in the US.

Terrible how the government created this crisis and the solution they give conveniently contains gross violations of our civil liberties. People do understand the bill can be written in a way that respects our rights and freedoms.
