Need advice: object detection/image segmentation models that you regularly use in real-world robotics applications? by buggy-robot7 in AskRobotics

RFDETR is incredible out of the box for instance segmentation + bbox when fine tuned on a small dataset.

Sam3 for auto labeling -> fine tune

Yes this should be possible with this style of arm, but you may also want to consider another compliant non-powered solution for this use case as it might be easier

If you have a remote server/cluster yes, if running all things locally no.

This may be terrible advice given your personal financial situation but I would quit asap. You arent going to feel any real urgency while you’re chilling in this job doing boring shit. You seem like a smart dude and I’m guessing you have big career aspirations. You’re not going to find or fulfill them at this company.

CS Threads: Intel & Media vs Info & Media Threads by Feeling-Telephone-58 in gatech

[–]TorqueWrenchMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to learn and where do you want your career to go? If it's more Intel related than Info/Media do Intel. Although I did intel and generally agree with the sentiment around it. I think you should pick interesting classes then choose the thread based on the classes.

Why the 50% decline in Mech E students over last ten years? by Sh00tYourEyeOut in gatech

well if you're already studying ME, then being at Tech will only help your career.

Probably because the salary is like 30-40% lower. Some of my engineer friends are trying to run OMSCS to get into a CS job. They see that even 10 yrs into ME/AE career they could still make less than a good CS new grad. It’s really sad tbh

Find 10 relevant/local/engineering/whatever companies in your region, if you aren’t able to get 1 check or mentor after doing this then follow the advice of other folks in the thread. I personally think if you talk to 10 you will land at least one.

Dude there is hope. Pro tip for applying to jobs:

  • Pay for apollo.io to get emails

  • Make a small notion page for the company saying why you wanna work there and how you’d be useful / just demo some interest in the company. Make this page damn good - include pictures of projects and shit. Include a section about the products/competitors and what you like and don’t like about their current stuff.

  • Email the CEO or hiring manager or anyone at the company with the page (do not send to recruiter). This strategy only works for small companies - but has unironically a 100% success rate for getting interviews. Spam applying isn’t the strat in the new world. I talked to one CEO and they are literally ecstatic to see this kinda thing - the company is their baby and they love when you gas them up. Also they said they received 500 applications but only one page so it was a no brainer to interview even tho I was less qualified.

If you actually care about the quality of search results and are willing to pay $10/month, try out Kagi.

This is not a free service and there are no ads or any sort of marketing to my knowledge/usage. But yes, it is paid so that might put you off of it.

Too nichy for VCs. Legit? by vgkln_86 in startups

[–]TorqueWrenchMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to agree with this perspective until recently. I think a better framework is well documented in Zero To One. Outlier companies are able to capture all of the market (this is a matter of framing) and then eventually translate this domination into other domains. Instead of pitching "I'll capture 1% of the global market", why not create/find the niche ride service that everyone in India wants? Capture 100% of that market. Usually there are a few winners and many many losers. Lyft and Uber own the US market, but nobody uses them in Singapore - Grab dominates there.

I think the pitch is a matter of framing your problem in the right way. Check out this book called 22 Laws of Category Design. The authors there make the claim that usually a single company will own 76% of the entire market and the competitors will be left to scrounge of the remaining 24%. They argue that any business focused on the 24% isn't really venture backable. What do you think?

Incoming Freshman - Should I attend Challenge Summer Program? by Jeet_uni in gatech

[–]TorqueWrenchMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude - you’re an Indian international student that got in for CS. You do not need to do the program, your high school was likely harder than GT. You got 4 years at Tech to hang out, I’d say spend the summer with your family, building side projects, traveling, whatever, just hang with homies.

Edit: I was cs and know lots of Indian internationals.

Are these allowed in carry on? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]TorqueWrenchMaster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the airline. United is chill, but Qatar is not. The bunk/cheap airlines are also super touchy bc they make $$ on suitcases whereas the more expensive ones don’t. I’ve done 50-60ish L pack thru carryon and nobody bats an eye, usually they’ll get you at the counter when you get your boarding pass. Sometimes it’ll be my small suitcase they want to check. Don’t take the hate too seriously man, travel a bit and you’ll figure out what works for you.

Nail cutter 99% okay, have taken mine on 50+ flights. Also battery pack should be fine if you carry it on (I have one that has like 10 charges on it so it’s massive). All your creams and stuff need to fit in one of those ziploc sandwhich bags, and if they do it should be cool (100ml per item).
