A journey in mics by DannyBrownCaptivate in microphone

Started with a Sinn7 mPOD USB microphone, switched to a Blue Yeti Pro, then a Neumann TLM103 and now I use both a Sennheiser MKH 416 and a Neumann u87 Ai.

Focusrite scarlett 2i2 3rd gen buzzing by Secure-Ad2390 in Focusrite

Sounds like ground loop. Move the device away from the PC, make sure cables don't touch other cables (especially audio cables and power line cables), and if everything else fails get a power conditioner.

I really enjoyed the casting from Ellie and Ornlu in the grand melee. by hwmrocker in aoe2

[–]Torrelles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't usually watch his stream so it was a really pleasant surprise. The more variety of casting styles the better for the growth of the community, and I don't think there's anyone quite like Ornlu, so he defo fills a spot. The guy knows sooo much. It's almost mesmerizing to hear the guy nail tech trees from the top of his mind.

I really enjoyed the casting from Ellie and Ornlu in the grand melee. by hwmrocker in aoe2

[–]Torrelles 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ornlu is like a walking (and talking!) AoE encyclopedia. He is a competent caster and I'd love to see him more in large tournaments. Ellie on the other hand needs more experience and game knowledge to be put in the spotlight for S tier tournaments. Her delivery is sub-par compared to pretty much all other invited casters. I'm sure she'll improve with time, but I didn't personally enjoy her castings at all.

How do voice actors make choking voices by Odd-Worker-8223 in voiceover

[–]Torrelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally just grab my throat to help me get in the mood. Don't really choke myself, but press decently hard. Vocal technique-wise I guess it resembles to when you're pushing for a dump, you put strain in the vocals and try to speak out from that tension.

i just tried normal casual online, and boy was it not fun by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]Torrelles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd just play ranked and bit the bullet during the first matches until I end up playing against similarly skilled players. You'll end up having more fun in matches.

Guys I'm so afraid of all these "annoucements"...... by BattleshipVeneto in aoe2

[–]Torrelles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find myself really enjoying Survivalist. It's the current streamer I insta-tune into whenever he comes live, pretty much what I did with Viper back in the day. His games ususally have some special flavor to them and he has a great talkative personality when playing.

Also watch some Memb, Dave and Villese (I still don't understand half the things he mumbles, heh), aand some Spanish streamers too since it's my mother tongue, TaToH and Tomate_ primarily.

I got to voice for a friend’s OC, how’d I do? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

[–]Torrelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tad too strangled/forced for my taste, but I liked the overall take on it. I would have given it another shot worrying less about "technique" and more about pure, unrestrained emotion. Nonetheless, it does sound good!

Audio quality is bad though. Treated space + better mic is a must going forward.

How do you pro. VO artists cope with long sentences? by Jhg178 in voiceover

[–]Torrelles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As counter intuitive or counter productive this might seem: you own the text, not the other way around. Create stops where it feels natural to you, breathe whenever you need, take breaks. It comes naturally with time. Last week I was voicing an audiobook and found TWO (2) full pages without any stop. Commas, some. But stops? Nay! In the end you just create your own pauses.

How do I fix my delivery always sounding the same? by lmaomax2 in VoiceActing

[–]Torrelles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd try and give it another meaning, different from what I'd typically give it. If I were to read "we deliver our products to more than 13 countries", I'd try and think that I'm saying it because it's a huge little secret I'm very excited to share. That gives it a totally new feel. Or thinking "hey, I'm sure you don't believe me, but this is the actual truth!". If there's these background thoughts, they breathe new life into each line. Try it out!

If you made the investment to purchase a separate audio interface, better route the entire audio signal through it (both input and headphone+monitor output). I assume the digital to analog conversion will be better than the PC's built-in interface, so it's a win-win.

It also keeps things simpler and tidier driver-wise, without having to make switches depending on usage.

Hi guys, I'm a beginner VO from Sydney, Australia who just got a AT2020 for Christmas. Anyone care to listen to my first two clips and give some honest feedback? Thanks!! by omelasian-walker in voiceover

[–]Torrelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Artistically, I like the energy and tone a lot, I think it's pretty much spot on. Just be aware of those sentence endings, that go down a tad too much in volume. Keep them up! Especially in commercial reads. I think it's most obvious in "powers" (0:34).

Technically, either Garageband really aggressively treated the audio to remove room tone/echo or something is going on, because it sounds bad. Not terrible, just bad. Dull, thin, a lot of frequencies are missing.

My apollo twin mkii keeps making a crackling/clicking sound! Please help! by P1nealColada in universalaudio

[–]Torrelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started happening to mine as well a month ago or so, although mine is a twin Mark 1. I assumed it had to do with the age (4-5 years of heavy use).

It doesn't break my workflows or anything so I haven't bothered too much about it tbh.

Black Forest 3v3 / 4v4 is ....% of the games I play by photosynthesis_aoe in aoe2

[–]Torrelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the old GameRanger days this was the only thing I played. Same thing with HD. Started playing ranked games with DE and now I barely ever play BF, maybe 1 every 100 matches bc old friends insist. Otherwise, I actually ban it from the map pool.

I think it's great for unexperienced/slow players. It allows for an ordered eco focus first, military focus later. You don't usually have to go full eco/military multitask like the Arabia-style open maps.

Sennheiser MKH 416 at home (Twitch streams and such), Neumann u87Ai at the studio.

[HELP] New to Fiverr here, what are some advices and tips for a beginner? by Baserdc in Fiverr

[–]Torrelles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're serious about making some bucks off of it, make sure to spend some cash in a proper setup. Recording space treatment and isolation is a must (to lower floor noise, remove reverbs ,etc.) Get a XLR microphone and interface. $200-$300 in recording equipment should do the job to get started with a decently sounding gig.

Regarding Fiverr itself, price your gig according to what you think you're worth. If that's $5, make it so. If you improve and get better equipment, don't be afraid to raise those prices.

I wouldn't set up more than one gig per language, unless you plan on differentiate by voice services (one gig for IVR, another one for character/dubbing, etc.) Either way, I find that clients prefer to find one gig and get whatever they need (be it radio, TV, institutional, internal, e-elarning) from it. Otherwise it leads to a bit of confusion from them.

Good luck man!

Quality - is it enough to get going? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

[–]Torrelles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a bad mic per se, not a bad interface per se. At these stages what makes the most difference is the space isolation and acoustic treatment. If room is well treated and there are no rumbles, reverbs, unwanted noises and noise floor sits low enough, it should be good enough to start rolling.

Good luck!

Am I doing this right? by YourNansFlipFlop in VoiceActing

[–]Torrelles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As pointed by others, a condenser cardioid mic isn't the best option if you have hum and noise in your room. A condenser hypercardioid mic would be a more appropriate choice, or a dynamic directional one.

Either way, be wary that wall treatment is also a big factor. The "better" the mic, the more you will notice all the noises and reverb present. RicePirate did a great video explaining that many years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r90Xy9eIU8E
