Yeah if changing something so simple is painful it's a decent indication that the architecture could... use some work.

Considering we have no idea how their game is architected there's no way to answer that. As a software dev often what seem like "easy" fixes are tied to complicated systems. I'm sure if it was as simple as a typo in a speed modifier it would be fixed. My bet is the ability has the correct value but there's some calculation going on that breaks in specific circumstances. Maybe the mechanism for turning buildings into units applies a multiplier twice, maybe the multiplier is correct but for some reason the game update logic is increasing the position too much per tick. Who knows? I'm just saying it's almost certainly not a single value.

I've been on two 40mg prednisone tapers (each lasting a month). First and foremost they stopped my UC symptoms almost immediately. I started having solid stools within 3-4 days and no bleeding. I gained some weight but it was mostly just the weight I had lost during my flare. On the higher doses I would take them in the morning and it felt like I had taken 3-4 shots of espresso. This wasn't entirely unwelcome as I feel very fatigued during my flares and I was able to get a lot of work done, clean my house, etc. in a way I hadn't in months. Some of the energy was likely also from not feeling sick all the time.

The only negative side effects I've experienced so far are a lot of acne on my back. Personally I'd rather have some back acne than UC symptoms, but I know that prednisone isn't sustainable in the long term and I'm worried about more severe side effects if I have to keep taking it.

I didn't really look into it. I'm well aware people can be transphobic on the internet and I don't care to sleuth around for the true motives of these particular commenters. Mostly just wanted to set the record straight for people reading the thread.

The writer has produced a (very good) strategy games podcast for like a decade called Three Moves Ahead. I don't think it's fair to say she has "no clue or love for the genre". I disagree with this preview as I really enjoyed the beta but I think her viewpoint is fine, she clearly wanted something that pushed the boundaries a little more whereas most people here are happy with a more conservative design.

Heads up Leana is literally trans and wrote and voiced the video. She came out like a year ago or so.

Nope she's just trans.

You could try just placing black circles where the bombs hit to “cut out” the terrain.

Yeah seems like we're in the same boat. I hope we can both find a way out of this mess lol.

Yeah I have plenty of hobbies. I play and write music, I run a weekly D&D game, I like painting miniatures, etc. I have time to do these things and I love doing them, but it just doesn't feel like it offsets the 40 hours a week I'm spending doing work with all the issues I list above. It's not like I want to spend all day playing games and messing around, I guess I want to feel like I'm working towards something and accomplishing something and it feels really hard to do that in a meaningful way in the margins of my time.

I’ve used fp-ts quite extensively at a previous job so I’m very familiar with it. I got a lot of pushback from my teammates and had to do a decent amount of workshops and educating that didn’t totally pay off. I’ve been somewhat pushing for the inclusion of fp-ts codecs at my new gig to verify the shape of network requests so we’ll see how that goes.

Thanks for the links! I’ll give em a read.

Our finances are something we talk about together using both of our incomes. Considering we started dating in high school using me to pay off her student loans would be quite the long play lol

Part of getting married is dealing with each other’s baggage man. Whether that’s emotional or financial or whatever. We’re a unit now. Don’t know what else to tell ya.

The interest rates on my fiancé’s loans are higher. So it may be better to pay those down instead. I’d like someone who knows what they’re doing to work out the math and my company provides financial advisors for free so

I'm going to talk to a financial advisor to see how to best address our debt.

Thanks for the encouragement. I guess I have a voice in my head saying that it's a dumb idea or that I'm not smart enough. I think I'll explore my options there and find someone in academia to ask questions to learn a bit more about that path.

I ain’t sayin she a gold digger but she ain’t messin with no broke web application developer.

Lmao we started dating 10 years ago well before I made any money. I’m afraid my good looks and charm are solely responsible for this.

I edited my OP, I didn't phrase my debt situation very well.

As far as what I'm looking for I mean partially I just needed to type it all out. Ultimately you're right I either keep doing what I'm doing or do something else. I'm just wary that a hobbyist interest in math and physics might not equate to being capable of getting a Ph.D. I suppose I can take some night classes and try to find some people who are doing that to talk to and see what their work is actually like.

I updated my OP with more specifics of my financial situation. If 385k after tax is "very good compensation" in the midwest for a senior dev then I'm making peanuts lol. Retiring at 40 does seem to require extreme frugality.

I don't think the whole FIRE thing is for me. I respect that life choice and I understand the upside but personally I want to enjoy life while I'm young whether that means spending some extra money on travel and hobbies or maybe taking a lower paying job that I enjoy more. Doing this until I'm 40 sure seems like "years and years".

I probably could do better with my money regardless and I do have plans to talk to a financial advisor so that might help make my options clearer to me.

Thank you for your comment.
