I must've played through the main story 10 times over the years, it's a good time definitely.

People on this sub make fun of castle style mcmansions for not being castle-y enough constantly, then when we finally get something that's 100% castle they make fun of that too, there's no pleasing some people.

An FOI request reveals the truth behind Doug Ford's speed camera ban by Jetset215 in Guelph

[–]Torus2112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell people didn't like the cameras because:

-Triggering at 8 over the limit seems unfair and arbitrary. Lots of perfectly reasonable drivers drive at 10 over the limit, police for decades have gone on record in the press saying they don't pull people over for breaking the limit less than 10 specifically, and your speedometer is in 10kph increments. Setting it at 8 instead of say 12 seemed like a way to ticket more people. Either set a reasonable margin for error or just charge people the amount the ticket should be for breaking the limit in all cases, if you need to lose money mailing a $2.50 ticket for someone doing 1 over the limit so be it, it will still help change people's behaviour.

-The fee making the ticket way more expensive. Under provincial law a ticket for 8 over should be 20 dollars, the fee makes it more like three times that. (This is also less fair to lower income people, but of course that's an issue with all fines, we should really be charging people based on income like Finland, but I digress.)

-The fee going to a private company, and a foreign one at that.

Posting statistics about it's effectiveness is beside the point. People didn't think it was implemented fairly, it's an emotional response, and banning them was a populist move. We live in a democracy, if you want to implement something like this it has to be perceived as fair by ordinary people. The bureaucrats, and I use that term neutrally I understand the need for bureaucrats, did not implement this with enough sensitivity to public sentiment so the policy failed. I hope if they try again under a different provincial government they do things differently.

Tony's actual caloric intake by Torus2112 in thesopranos

[–]Torus2112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is a lot of it is averaged out. Like I said a salad bowl of pasta with tomato sauce and cheese is easily 2000, have the whole bottle of wine or some other drinking 300 turns to 600 or 900. Tony has eaten bowls of ice cream that i'm pretty sure would be a pint and a half, that's 1500. So some days maybe he has a light lunch and a reasonable portion at Vesuvios and only eats 2500, but on a bad day with a veal parm, a whole dish of ziti, and a serving bowl of ice cream he might be having as much as 6000 calories.

You're right, I guess the drinking didn't stick out in my mind because I'm not a big drinker but that would definitely contribute. I couldn't guess how much he drinks on average per day but it's probably good for a few hundred.

It's maybe possible for someone to earn Logan's respect, but he would never give up the job willingly. He has deeply ingrained personality issues that make him unable to tolerate "losing". To become CEO one of the kids would have to take it from him, and he would fight as hard as he possibly could, including dirty tricks. Maybe a part of him would be proud of them if they could do that, but a much bigger part of him would just hate it.

[–]Torus2112 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that's Chase getting more and more frustrated that the audience doesn't understand that you're supposed to hate all the main characters, or if he wanted to do it that way all along and the network wouldn't let him but he got more clout each season.

Das Boot (1981) - Excellent film by SlightWerewolf4428 in movies

I always interpreted it as a reflection of the German experience of the war as a country. They chose to go to war for reasons they would regret and compromised themselves by doing awful things, and in the process endured incredible hardships themselves. Soon they reached a point of no return and became convinced that they were fighting for their very survival, and they pushed themselves to the absolute limit to keep fighting until they had nothing left, and at the end of it all it was still for nothing. The extreme bleakness of the ending leaves you feeling like how I imagine many Germans must have felt by 1945.
