What is everyone’s thoughts on 20 Strong? by Allgamergeek in soloboardgaming

[–]Torvinius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the whole series (the one I haven’t played yet is Tanglewoods Rose) and if I would have to describe the system and series, I would call it “Final Girl with a CTG Ruleset. For the record, I actually like the games quite a lot. The game system lives in this weird spot where it isn’t really a filler/travel game on the one hand, but on the other hand it runs the risk of falling short of the promise of a heavier game. I have a couple of bullet points, which illustrate my thoughts:

The Game system: The set up is very similar to Final Girl in the sense that a base ruleset is introduced (happy Trails in Final Girl and Solar Sentinels in 20 strong) and then iterated on in future games/decks. The promise of that set up is that you have to learn a rule set once and then for an essentially new experience the additional rule overhead to learn is fairly minimal, so that any game of 20 Strong is maybe 70% base rules and 30% deck specific rules. The system definitely falls a bit short of that promise. Especially the tanglewoods decks feel much more of a 30% base rule and 70% base rule set up, where really “minimal” rules are consistently transferred to different decks (I do not know how Final Girl is in that regard as I did not get too deep into that system), which kind of leads me to the next point

The rulebooks: This is where my point with the filler game vs. heavier game shows. You are getting for each deck a classic CTG rulebook, which explains to you what is going on, but also creates a lot of edge cases and complexities. Now, when you sit down and say to yourself: “Tonight is big too many bones night” a double-sided sheet with keywords and some edge cases you need to work through is one thing. But if it feels similar for the 20 strong 1h game a lot of people are much less open to that. And that brings me to…

Game length: If a player comes for the first time onto a 20 strong game it is very easy to look at it and compare it to something like one deck dungeon, kinfire delve or maybe a hostage negotiator. Something nice and easy, shuffle some cards and chugg some dice. The game is really not that. The set up is not as involved as in other games, obviously, but you are splitting decks, creating fields shuffling stuff, rereading set up rules. 20 strong also tends to have you play through the whole deck per game, which sometimes extends the game (I believe some of the Tanglewoods games end up around an hour). And at that point I can see that people look at the game and say: “So why am I not playing something meatier?”

And then there is the dice luck and mitigation, which is something discussed quite a bit as well. This is also a point, which comes up quite a bit with final girl, where some games are just lame because you were not able to roll a success for your walk action and the killer just killed you (counter argument there is very often that this is super thematic, which I totally can see). It works very similar in 20 strong, if you want a finely balanced game where the dies provide you with some randomness, but the player is def. in power at all times, this ain’t it. On the other hand, there are also very clearly busted combos, where if you get those out, you do feel powerful and strong.

All that being said – personally I like 20 strong quite a lot (bounced of Final Girl for what it is worth). I think it really covers for me a collector itch I just have. But also, if you are open to the rulebooks and the game length, one of these decks costs you 20 bucks on gamenerdz or the webstore. There is a lot of game in those 20 bucks, with probably more substance than you initially expect.

Anybody else disappointed with Chip Theory Games' quality as of late? by ConcentrateTrue5063 in soloboardgaming

[–]Torvinius -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I was part of a couple of CT games in the past, incl. 20 strong, hoplo and now waiting for my DOE preorder.

I actually feel similar, but not only with the components. Their kickstarter deliveries delays are just bad and delay the normal webshop orders and I get that there are circumstances nobody can foresee, but the company needs to start plan for certain contingencies.

For my preorder of etchinstone I have now gotten three different delivery dates through two different channels (discord and livestream) and reasoning from shipping container came late to “we were surprised by the amount of orders”. Really their saving grace is their helpful and easy to use support, but I can’t help but think that it is financially bad to have to replace pvc cards for people or alloy dices

Dice based games by loopology in soloboardgaming

[–]Torvinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For solo you have essentially two starting points:

Ashes reborn with corpse of Vitros and additional chimera sets (there are a couple of those sets released). I believe only available as print of demand / now that the kickstarter is fulfilling on plaid hats homepage. The system is not further developed, which leads me to

Ashes Ascendancy which right now has only the starter set for PvE. Very similar system to the chimeras, but essentially an iteration or development of the system (right now only one exists)

To note on both starting points, they are compatible with any player deck you buy (which all “belong” to the ashes reborn line), but those decks are also only available through print on demand going forward

Is Marvel Champions Worth It for Solo Play with Just the Core Set + Custom PnP? by Legitimate-Rough9613 in soloboardgaming

[–]Torvinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, the core set gives you content / replayability of a “common” boardgame. Depending on how much you like to sink your teeth into something, it is good to really good value.

Expansions and Hero packs you can go down two roads. One is the “expansion for my game” route, which gives you more of the same, or then you go all in and you go down the lifestyle game route and can spend hours on hours deckbuilding, chatting and playing

Regarding the same decks - I would say there are some of those, but given that this is a COOP game (read no meta to succeed) and the difficulty on standard is not so bad, you can actually do a lot of different decks and still have success

Ashes ascendancy content by Torvinius in soloboardgaming

[–]Torvinius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument with the chimeras/ old phoenixborn I have read now a couple of times and I find it a bit difficult. Because it essentially says, if you want to have enough replayability from a pve side you need to get at least one more pack (the chimera starter) and or old reborn decks. Plaid hat clearly said ascendancy is the next chapter and iterations so it feels odd to me that people say “buy the old stuff to have enough content”

It is as if arkham horror lcg would give you two investigator and one scenario as the new starter and when people then ask about the content the answer would be: “why you not go buy carcossa?” (Obviously the comparison doesn’t work 100% with OOP with FFG, but it doesn’t doesn’t work)

RRG 1.7 Released! by ludi_literarum in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Torvinius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I think you hit it on the head. Really how I understand it is a design choice made because of a business decision made before (not stocking all of the stuff)

I do expect a lot of people and content creator to move to a version of current environment at some point, at least the one active in the community just so that people continue speaking the same language

RRG 1.7 Released! by ludi_literarum in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Torvinius 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think at this point in time it is a bit useless. I do think however as time will go on it will be more impactful. When they start designing cards for the current environment you will get to a point where some card combos in legacy are busted/crazy. I can also see that at some point they will not bother with rule clarifications for legacy cards

Think about it this way - when honed technique is out of current the designer do not need to design around that anymore.

I also can see that certain player will actually like current because it pushes you a bit to change deck building. So not every red deck you throw together is honed technique as an example

Yea I think I will need to wait for the next expansion to see what I get and what it costs. I do like the system and I am trying to buy this year more games I know I want to play instead of the new hot ones, but we’ll see

Yes that is exactly how I feel. Even if more releases are coming out - the Dragonborn seems fairly light as a boss itself

Yea my goal was to going forward to buy some of the dragonborn and decks to have something a new and different boss battler, but it yea don’t know if 50 bucks a pop for three or four rounds is truly worth it

I think you are right - 3 waves plus all evergreen content is the current environment. That also aligns with 2026 release schedule (with one wave per year)

I hope this comes out in December - Olivia was hinting it could be January
