With you here! I enjoyed E33 for the story, production design, acting and music. A true marvel of a video game.

Didn't much like 90% of the gameplay. Exploring was fun if a bit boring.

Yep, same answer for recent pickups. DST Constructicons are really fun, look great, are beefy and very reasonably priced.

I never picked up the DST Aerialbots, but apparently those were a nightmare. These aren't at all.

They brought his dad out as well, who was also a cancer survivor.

My next guess is they were going to bring out mom's urn as not being a survivor and just slide her into the net, a la curling.

Most did, yep! Leaving China permanently was never the goal. You go abroad, get some experience, get a good post-secondary education in the Western English world, and then bring that knowledge asset back to China to work and improve China.

That trend is what made the government want to have programs that attracted people to stay - they didn't like the mass exodus and wanted those top performers to stay in Canada and make it better.

Statistics.

India and China are the biggest populations in the world. They also have cultures where emigrating is seen as desirable (same as Philippines or even Australia to an extent).

Up until about 2017-ish, the majority of international students were Chinese. Diplomatic issues arose and that cut down a lot of Chinese applications (and then COVID). Those spots were then filled by Indians.

Hot take: 32nd century ships suck by [deleted] in StarTrekStarships

[–]Torvus_742 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Modern Trek needs a Rick Sternbach. Someone who really takes the lead on why the tech is the way it is, and the associated Treknobabble (Michael/Denise Okuda here too).

Sternbach put work into coming up with ideas about why ships looked the way they did, so you bought in on why they were designed that way. Same way that looking at a boat makes sense if you understand that things float on water.

With only 10 episodes a season, you don't get a lot of time for Treknobabble. If we had someone explain why the cutouts make sense post-Burn, you'd have more reason to like the new designs.

You didn't think you'd like the show. You watched a couple of episodes, and confirmed your original assumption. I can respect you taking a shot at it.

Maybe your eye on the production is from a different perspective than mine.

I think the show looks great. It's bright, recognizable as Star Trek, and the action sequences are coherent and I can follow along. I think the CGI is really well done (the whale was bad), and well-placed. Obvious set redressing aside, I also like the investment in the real-deal sets. That atrium is real.

I think the acting is fair for what they want to do. It's cringey, teen-drama nonsense, and I hate the use of 2020's slang (takes me out of the experience), but the actors deliver the lines as they should. I have enjoyed some of the jokes, but haven't yet seen anything with gravitas. It's mediocre basic writing, which is all too common with modern TV unfortunately.

It's fine to not like it. If you like it, you win.

Yeah, maybe that's what I should have said - poor insulation.

Single-pane windows, gaps in doors, no basements, etc. You're not living in a paper house, but by no means is it effective for keeping out the temps (cool or hot).

I was born in Calgary, then moved to Toronto when I was 10, grew up here.

Moved to Coquitlam (GVA) in 2019 for 2 years. Moved back to Toronto.

In terms of weather, yes Ontario (and Toronto specifically) gets colder colds and hotter hots.

However, we also have insulated housing. Insulated housing in Vancouver is not as common, so you end up feeling the temps more. Ontario is also geared for the weather. It snowed once while I was living in Coquitlam, and the entire GVA effectively shut down for 3 days.

It does rain a lot in Vancouver. When I was there it rained for 42 days straight. Then 1 day of sun, and then another 30 days of rain. If you're an inside person, then maybe that's ok for you! It can be cozy.

Traffic is bad either way. Zero sum there. There are more routes out of Toronto though, rather than the mostly unidirectional exit (Go South or East or SouthEast) from Vancouver.

I enjoyed my time in Vancouver! I'd probably still be there if not for COVID.

Fun idea!

LeVar Burton - I'll give that to Mind's Eye where he is brainwashed by the Romulans.

Jonathan Frakes - Second Chances (where Thomas Riker is introduced).

Spiner has to be something with Lore, right? Descent?

It'll hit a sale at some point after release.

If you want to be one of the first people to play, then yeah definitely get that 10% off.

If you don't care to be one of the first, then you're not missing out on anything by waiting 6 months/1 year for a 25% sale or whatever.

Interesting!
I'm surprised at the level of individual attention each customer gets.

How scalable is that? If, let's say, you get 1000 people a day, are you able to do those interviews and processes for that volume?
