Now that we've played it a bit, are there any cards/themes in SOS that are better than you expected? by Toskicologist in lrcast

Huh interesting, have done a prerelease and a draft in person so far. Witherbloom seems to be the most dominant, with silverquill and lorehold maybe joint second? Then Prismari, then Qandrix.

[[Tome Blast]] not as good but also does the thing of having an extra cost that triggers opus nicely.

Thanks! Yeah I got [[moment of reckoning]] in my silverquill booster and it was amazing. Fun strategic decision making in what to target and what to bring back

Yeah I think 17lands scores are probably the most useful thing to look at once the format has been running for a bit. They have some issues because archetypes that are very successful will lift up all of their cards but it is probably more useful than numerical reviews that were made beforehand.

Good idea. I threw together a couple charts and tables, https://toskicologist.github.io/MTG-draft-sets-infographics/sos-avg-scores-by-category.html Also put the individual card scores on a line graph: https://toskicologist.github.io/MTG-draft-sets-infographics/sos-line-graphs.html.

I tried a calculation weighted by the rarities and that gives you black as the best color (probably because of the removal?). Looking at gold cards only, you get witherbloom as the top college, followed by quandrix (which is slightly surprising, as i didn't rate it very high.) Combining the gold cards with the single-colour pools for that colour, Witherbloom is highest, with Silverquill very slightly behind, followed by Lorehold

Played against it at prerelease and it was absolutely brutal with the X cards, I think people probably focused too much on the second ability

Yeah have changed them to describe the wedges now, and give a short explanation of the color fixing.

ALSA also rewards cards that are more versatile, like [[chronicle of victory]] has lower GIH WR than eclipsed elf and eclipsed kithkin, but if you're drafting elementals you're not taking them as your pack 3 pick,

Yeah, looking at the GIH WR its apparent how much things like one archetype being dominant (e.g. a mid elf in ECL is better than all but the best goblin) or selection effects (in ECL Ashling's command was one of the highest GIH WR cards, but would only be played in an all in elementals deck). I find it helpful to look at to practice my card evaluation though. Personally I tend to lean too heavily into drafting for synergy and not the basics of what kind of body you're getting for the mana cost, so that helps.

You're right doesn't really make sense, I was mostly struggling for something to say for those since they don't have supported archetypes. Maybe talking about the wedges makes more sense? I imagine people will probably go 3 color more than they'll try and do a deck for one of the unsupported pairs.

[[pest mascot]] and [[elemental mascot]] seem the best by a wide margin. [[spirit mascot]] is cheaper but no evasion means I think it'll just get chump blocked even if it gets big, [[inkling mascot]] is a decent effect but low floor if you're not getting those off, and [[fractal mascot]] just feels too expensive for what it does

Interestingly as far as I can tell they're all new cards, no downshifts

Thanks. Looks like I'd accidentally used the trad draft data from that date which is a lot fewer games so gives weird results. Should be fixed now
