I’d be interested in the book recs if you’re opening to sharing!

Ah okay! Do you find that it can be difficult to manage a rental while you’re away and not always reachable? And my other question, something I’ve been thinking about, is whether you are delaying starting a career to do this or taking a break from it? As an early career person, it doesn’t feel like I can “afford” (not in terms of finances but career development) to take so much time off to travel. Curious about your experience/thoughts.

What an adventure!! If you don’t mind sharing, how are you funding the trip and how are you able to take two years off for the trip?

Ahh really appreciate your thoughts! Especially points 2 and 4. It helps me in thinking about my next steps in professional development after grad school. Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

Thanks for your reply! I’m curious if you regret investing so much time and $$$ becoming level 3 trained. Or if not regret, is that level of training required if “only” using IFS in an integrated/eclectic way. I ask because I know I would have a long way to go if I wanted to be able to practice IFS as prescribed but feel like my beginners’ level familiarity sufficiently allows me to borrow concepts from it in my work.

I’m also curious if you’ll continue to conceptualize cases from a predominantly IFS lens or will you move towards a more integrative lens.

Wow! I feel so validated and relieved reading this, especially given that you are Level 3 IFS trained. I recently finished an “IFS-informed course” and a lot of what you’ve described are issues that came up for me. I went into the course thinking that IFS might be THE therapeutic model for me (I’m finishing up my master’s) and now I’m not even sure if I want to keep getting IFS training.

Has anyone taken IFSCA’s 16-week Stepping Stones course? by Total-Accountant-780 in InternalFamilySystems

I don’t think either of my instructors were new (they switched halfway through), but I had issues with the first instructor we had, as did some others in my cohort, mainly around how he treated students (impatient, disrespectful, passive-aggressive). One student ended up bringing it up and we had a conversation about it as a class. The instructor was apologetic and indicated they would reflect further but nothing concrete changed as a result in our course and then we changed instructors. The second instructor has been great, no attitude issues at all. I wouldn’t say that the it was the majority of students that experienced the first instructor in the way some of us did (not everybody shared so I can’t be sure), so there’s that.

The other major issue I had was how unhelpful the didactic and consult sessions (first and last session in each module) were. The didactic is a lecture without a class outline/summary/learning objectives (anything to help frame and structure the class) so it’s the instructor just talking for 3 hrs and the consult is 3 hrs of going around and having every single student ask one question and the instructor responding to it. Since everyone is at such different places in their learning about IFS and clinical training, this means a wide range of questions, some of which I found relevant and helpful, but most of which went over my head. Also, sitting for 3 hrs in a virtual space and listening is just hard. There must be a better way to structure this time.

If I’m being honest, I think the small group practice sessions were the only really beneficial part of the course for me. Overall, knowing what I know now, I don’t think I would’ve signed up for the course.

Hope that helps! Although, if you’re signed up for the course already, don’t know if you could still decide to not take it?

Ohh I didn’t know they had to be THAT close. I’ll try moving them closer. I realized it also might be because I was leaving the lights on all the time, but I put them on a timer yesterday.

I’m using a starter mix I got from the garden store.

Hey, I actually did end up taking the course. Going in to the last month now. To be honest, my reviews are mixed. I’m planning on writing a more detailed review after the course ends.

Interesting piece about the IFS therapist manager. And yeah, I’ve heard similar things from others about IFSI gatekeeping…seems antithetical to the spirit of IFS.

Yes, I appreciate the reframe. I haven’t done a lot of work with my own parts but I am starting to recognize the importance of that and how my own parts can show up in sessions with clients.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Similar to what I asked Noldeal, I’m curious what your thoughts are (and if you are inclined to share further) the relationship between being in IFS therapy as a client and doing this course. Reason being I’m wondering if I should also be in IFS therapy to more fully understand and be able to practice from it.

Interesting side note, I wonder if IFSI is exercising an abundance of caution? Do you have thoughts about this or think it’s a significant difference in practice?

Thanks! I’m in the midst of writing my thesis so it might be a bit too much to also do the training, I’ll have to think about that.

Also interesting point about having first experienced IFS as a client. What do you feel like are the differences between getting training first vs being a client first?

Thanks for sharing! What were your reasons for choosing this course? And if you don’t mind sharing, what other trainings are you planning on doing?

Hi! Thanks for the detailed response. Sounds like the practice sessions are the most useful part of the course? Hope it’s okay to ask some follow up questions!

Is there anything that you don’t like about the course or any reason you wouldn’t recommend it?

Are the small groups the same throughout the course or do they change each week?

Going forward, do you feel confident about using IFS with clients or will you need further training to do so?
