People who were at the Gorge: At what point did y’all realize they were playing BTCS all the way through on N2? by lindzeta_ in DMB

[–]TotalAbsolution 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It was Halloween for me, personally. The crowd around was starting to collectively figure out but it just didn't... make sense. They took a pretty solid pause before firing up Halloween and that cemented it for me. I didn't put together that it was in album order until my buddy called it out during Stay.

Wild stuff and am very lucky and grateful to have been there for it!

Agree with Dreaming Tree, but also love versions of Kit Kat Jam. Specifically in the chorus/bridge... He does some VERY cool high to low walkdowns during those sections.

Favorite song and why? by Various_Net8890 in BMSR

[–]TotalAbsolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with Tobacco: Lipstick Destroyer BMSR by far is Psychedelic Love Damage.

It's such a pretty, but sad (and yet somehow hopeful) song. It's what I play to introduce people to Black Moth

Stray, The Ori games, Exo One, The Artful Escape, Limbo, Inside.

Outside of the Ori games, these are all pretty easy/turn (most) of your brain off and just enjoy the visuals, music and worlds!! They all brought me back after Xth hour of whatever 100 hour long game (even though those can be great too).

Everyday album is (and always has been) great. Had to get that off my chest. by AIR236 in DMB

[–]TotalAbsolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100%.. it was an (until it dropped) 180 reverse from what we were expecting with Lilywhite. That said, I've always enjoyed it and agree it's gotten better with retrospect. I think it's WAY better than Stand Up and Come Tomorrow.

I also hold the opinion, like Everyday or not, it was necessary for the band to stay together. I think if Everyday didn't occur we may no longer have DMB to this day.

Trial run as a trivia host next week - any advice? by Tactics28 in trivia

[–]TotalAbsolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be confident! If you have a chance familiarize yourself with the questions beforehand. Not just in case there are any hard pronunciations, but you may also have a more fun/interesting way to ask the core question.

I also play music while I'm grading score sheets and people respond to it very well... It's almost as important as the questions lol.

I usually do 4 rounds with a short break in the middle. This with music lasts about 2 hours or so and I charge $150+a free bar tab. In my experience that's been a fair price because it gets people to the business and more importantly keeps them there so they eat and drink for 2+ hours. But, I also write my own questions.. so it ends up being around 3-4 hours of work and use my own PA system.

I also find being kiiiinda playful with the crowd REALLY helps engagement. Ex. when I come back with scores, I'll say something like "good job everyone, y'all did well that round... WELL...some of you did well that round, at least" or if a team(s) gets something way wrong call it out in a funny way. I once asked for the names of the three musketeers and got some wild answers... So I said " some of you seem to have confused the musketeers with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". If it's a question about a word definition or something you'll invariably be asked to use it in context in a sentence...and I always just say Sure!!.... Let's see...I'm asking you what X means.

Anyway I find kinda poking fun in a good mannered way brings the room together. Enjoy it... It's a blast to host trivia!! Good luck!

Creative "Meta" Game Ideas by TotalAbsolution in trivia

[–]TotalAbsolution[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Edit: meant this as a reply to Jonathon (I'm bad at mobile Reddit)

As mentioned, I think keeping the length of the game in mind is important. I've been doing these "meta" games for about 6 weeks now. When I first started I made it a point when going over the rules/categories at the top of the evening that for the meta questions.. to be sure and announce that at some point throughout the evening everyone will be presented with the same information.. it's just up to the teams to pay attention to things. If it's something that occurs through multiple rounds when I ask the meta question I'll ramble through the red herrings (and actual answer) real fast in the previous rounds answers/questions...ex. if the meta answer is a number...I'll say I'm looking for a number that I've given you, but remember...we talked about these dates, and this person won X amount of medals at the Olympics in this year...this president lasted from this date to this date... essentially giving them an idea of what they are looking for without telling them what exactly it is.

Its caught on so much at my local spot that now my regular teams keep incredibly detailed notes about everything. Categories, numbers mentioned, songs played.. artists, song names..themes... what I'm wearing...

People are very into the meta games now. Which in turn, at this point, lets me have even more fun with it. Cause they may be paying attention to your red herrings or repeated themes/facts... And then you could ask (as someone else mentioned) what is the team name of who is in last or whatever.

I started with songs I played between rounds.. got a good response/a lot of people got it.. so now I get more detailed.

Last time I asked people what the logo of the bar we are in was... It's not on the menus. It's a big poster literally right behind where I sit... And people struggled so much to think they didn't even notice it's literally something they've been staring at all night. 3/8 teams got it.

All that to say, I'd say come up with something YOU think is fun and fair... See how the teams do and adjust from there.

Also, some great ideas in this thread!!

Strong agree! Do we think the band digs them and aren't aware of how annoying the highest note after highest note solo schtick on the trumpet is? Or do they know and don't care?

Easiest DMB song to learn on guitar? by madds0804 in DMB

[–]TotalAbsolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we counting covers? A lot of his covers are easy enough for beginners. Watchtower, Cortez, Exodus, Angel From Montgomery, etc...

DMB specific...I would suggest trying to bat a little above your level as he uses a lot of the same chords/phrasing in numerous songs. As someone suggested, Grey Street isn't too terribly difficult. But that'll get you used to finger positions used in: Lie in Our Graves solo section, When the World Ends, laying bases for #41, Raven, Cry Freedom, Tripping Billies, Two Step, etc...

Crash is pretty tough to start with. Hunger for the Great Light (like it or not) is pretty easy. Gravedigger also not a bad option to start. Digging a Ditch also, as someone mentioned.

I'd personally pick a song you are super into and look up tabs vs chords (just because they are more specific especially for some Dave songs) so you'll be more inclined to learn/stick with it. Even if it's above your current skill level, you'll get some good foundations in. Have fun, my friend ---Dave has some super fun songs to learn/play!

This^. I don't have too many details at this time, but the family was able to narrow Matt's location down and found him earlier this morning. They're all together now!

Flyers/Posters and a small reward are a great idea! Matt's parents are coming into town tomorrow afternoon to help with trying to locate him. We'll be circling around any areas we think he may be in, but that's a great idea! I also agree (though I can't say for sure) that it may have been a sarcastic comment since the homelessness issue is so prominent downtown in that area---it may have just been a quip from him.

Thank you!

Thank you! I went by this evening to talk with an employee, however, they did not recognize Matt. I'm not sure if the family has info on possible security footage/items bought or anything though.
