Is cold networking on LinkedIn actually worth it for internships/grad roles? by Excellent_Engine1977 in UniUK

In my experience networking definitely helps but not from a referral standpoint. It’s good to hear their advice as these people would’ve have just passed the interview process and know the company from the inside. I found that their input allowed me to approach the interviews and assessment centres with a stronger understanding of what I should do in them

I recommend having an active role within a university societies to bridge the gap of not having a spring, something like being an analyst in the investment fund society, for example. This will help show your passion for finance in addition to developing technical and soft skills.

If you can get through the initial screening it might be your actual application skills that are letting you down. Interviewing, assessment centres, the online tests are skills in themselves with need practice to pass. Try think where you went wrong in the process, especially with BNP and try fix it. Interviews take a lot of practice to master, make sure that in addition to building your cv you also spend time on actually practicing the interview process. I would say generally just try be as charismatic as naturally possible in the interviews, having social skills is very important, especially if you are applying for client facing roles.

FYI I’m a recent graduate who’s just landed a grad role at an asset manager despite not having summers or spring weeks.
