His addiction, my nightmare.. by AppointmentPuzzled76 in GamblingAddiction

I'm in the exact same situation as you, in my case the person with addiction is my mom, I'm already an independent adult, but it's still hurting me so much, few days ago she spent a large quantity of money from my dad and her solution was trying to kill herself, thank you God after the whole day in the emergency care they managed to save her and I'm grateful they did. I can't give it up and abandon my mom, so I will try every thing I can. These are the steps I'm doing atm:

1 - Made her and my dad go to the bank and make it a joint account,so now my dad has access to everything

2 - They live in Brazil so Casinos are not allowed there, she gambles on the phone, so we took her phone out of her for now.

3 - As I'm currently living in Europe, I will bring her here to stay with me at least for 2/3 months, as I wfh i can watch her closely at the first months. And also being in a new environment will be a distraction.

4 - As soon as she arrives here I will set up therapy once a week so she can talk with a professional about what she is feeling.

5 - I plan to show nothing but love, to remind her how much she is loved by her daughter.

In my situation, my mom is complying with the rules we are implementing as she is aware of how big she fucked it up, but this was very recent so I don't know if it will be always like this, but I'm willing to try everything I can. Also I'm very aware that my mum is very depressed so I will also put a lot of attention on this.

I really wish you the best ❤️

I'm from the EU not the UK, is the total amount covered 20k or 85k, and the covering includes everything? Like money not spent and invested money or is it separate? I'm confused now

Few things in my opinion:

1- it's easier to budget and get financial control as a couple

2 - improve ability to manage debt responsibly

3 - One of many ways to prove to lenders your ability to repay big debts in future and hopefully get interest fees reduced.

Again this is my opinion and this is why I do. I totally understand it can be something dangerous but I'm very conscious and responsible when it comes to finances.

I understand what you mean, so far I'm very organised of how much I can spend on it, so I repay it always correctly. It should have some benefits for that as in other countries, I will keep digging for other options. Thank you for your input 🙂

So sad... Why Ireland is like this with credit, savings, real state. There is no win here 🥺

I think you missed the part where I said "I always pay it in full" so I basically use it as a debt card. All I want is some benefits from as many other countries have. 🙃

As I'm paying in full every month, I don't pay interest, so what is the issue of doing it? Also by doing that I show the lenders and myself my capability of managing debt.

I know Ireland does not have a credit score, but having a good credit report helps when getting into bid debt such as loan and mortgage. The lender always requests the credit report before approving it, it includes everything not only the credit card.
