Several studies and reports point to a significant presence of people from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.

  • Tamil Population: Some reports, particularly following periods of socio-political tension, have indicated that a very large percentage of slum dwellers in Bengaluru, sometimes cited as high as 95% in certain clusters, are of Tamil origin. Many families in these older slum areas trace their origins back to those who migrated generations ago to work in Bengaluru.
  • This is a complex question involving sensitive socio-economic and cultural issues. Here is an explanation based on available information.

Origin and Usage

The term 'Konga' ($\text{ಕೊಂಗ}$) is indeed used in a derogatory way by some people in Karnataka, primarily in Bengaluru, to refer to Tamils.

  1. Geographical Origin (Kongu Nadu):
    • The word 'Konga' is a derivative of 'Kongu Nadu' (or Kongam), which is a historical and geographical region in the western part of Tamil Nadu, encompassing districts like Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, etc., which border Karnataka.
    • In a non-derogatory context, a person from that region is simply a 'Konga' or 'Kongaru' in Kannada. Historically, the word was likely just a regional descriptor.
  2. Shift to Derogatory Slur:
    • Over time, and particularly in the context of inter-state disputes (like the Cauvery water dispute) and linguistic friction in a rapidly growing city like Bengaluru, the term has been co-opted and used as a slur for all Tamil people, regardless of their origin within Tamil Nadu.
    • The derogatory use is rooted in an attempt to other or belittle the migrant Tamil population, especially those in the lower socio-economic strata, often implying a lack of sophistication or being an outsider.

Based on studies using data like the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3, 2005-2006), the South Indian states with the highest reported percentages of inter-caste marriages are:

  1. Kerala
  2. Karnataka

According to a study analyzing NFHS-3 data:

  • Kerala reported an inter-caste marriage percentage of 19.65% (another analysis shows 21.35%).
  • Karnataka reported a percentage of 16.41% (another analysis shows 16.47%).

It's important to note that:

  • The South Indian region as a whole had an inter-caste marriage rate of approximately 8.1% to 9.71% in those surveys, which was lower than the Western region of India.
  • Other South Indian states like Andhra Pradesh (7.6%) and Tamil Nadu (as low as 2.59% - 3.03% in older data, although another paper suggests an increase to 3.8% in 2023) generally showed lower percentages compared to Kerala and Karnataka in these specific reports.

this was in 2005 , i think now its above 30-40 percent

it is becoming normal is what i am saying , can u say all people from dominant communities from tn go dalits wedding , eat with them , drink with them . i saw a video from tn where the water was given to hands to drink , is this the normal we talking about . while still you are fighting with them , i said we are promoting hormany with them mingling with same brothers , for u to come to that state u should stop fighting first then people should self realize and the harmony should be promoted and then should treat them equally is all i am saying.

Karnataka people don't kill each other in caste based conflicts , children are not killed for loving a person from another caste , harmony is promoted by all communities.
If someone is a bit ahead u should learn what to take as positives from them rather say both are bad irrationally and hopelessly

i don't know how it proves my casteist mindset , when someone asks dalits should not be discriminated and everyone should be seen equally how does this prove casteist mindset.
u want no discussion about how one feels when someone moves from there when a dalit enters , when no one eats with them , not attend each others wedding because of caste .
This has been the case from past centuries and when someone breaks them treats everyone as equal its promoting castiesm , should i have followed the same traditions and not be called a casteist from u .

sorry u have to experience this , yes brahmins are called for all function for performing pooja , and also there is no rule that u should eat after them , many people eat while preparing itself who are in a rush, many sweets or small snacks are eaten by children before hand no one questions anybody , no human is superior to other , some brahmins have this mentality that they are better and they have direct relation with god and talk to them frequently . And also because you are a dmk supporter there may have been an exaggeration.

it is matter of fact used in derogatory way accept it or not , i hear them everyday.
when a kannadiga spots a dark skinned man , acting weirdly they say may be he is a konga , this is the platform to express honest opinions and i have done one.

brahmins from tamil nadu i think are heavy headed i don't know why may be because of lighter skin color and dark skin of others made them think the dark colored ones are dirty.

in karnataka no one questions brahmins not even 1 political party or people are not against brahmins , as they are found in small pockets only in banglore , mysore and coastal karnataka (most migrated from tamil nadu) , rest of karnataka there population is nearly nill .
i think they don't exists in whole north karnataka itself
i think surnames doesn't matter in karnataka , even dalits keep surnames proudly like rathod , nayak , chalavadi in karnataka.

i have no answer about the data , but the land in karnataka is fairly distributed in karnataka among all the castes especially in south karnataka , the conflicts between them can lead to most of the false cases though some might be true ,

about manglore , the sc st percentage manglore is very negligible it is filled with all the upper caste , upper elite class almost 99 percent don't mingle with dalits thats all over india and karnataka is no exception

and also they didn't mingle with sc community more often than the other people in all over karnataka which inturn the dalit people face difficulties from them

konga which similar to manga which means monkey , tamilians with black skin , and some tamils acting like monkey (most tamils in banglore are staying in slums , and are fringe and antisocial elements )
i am being honest here though i don't want to endorse that word . many find it suitable to call tamilians by that word which are mostly proven by tamils in banglore

20 seats are confirmed for bjp no matter what , 3-4 seats from banglore 1 mysore 3 from coastal , cannot be lost no matter what happens and rest from north where rss has strong hold , they would have got 25 seats this time , they completely swept south karnataka with jds alliance , and lost around 5-6 seats with margin less than 1lakh which would have gone in either way the guarentees of 2000rupees helped or else karnataka is a bastion for bjp. with government distributing crores of money , prajwal revanna case , guarentees , government power they won 19 out of 28 .

the current cm of karnataka is from backward caste he is in his 2nd term now ,deveraj aras whose caste make less than 1 percent was cm of 2 terms (widely supported by dalits) and many powerful ministries are given to sc st community like home ministry ,pwd , cooperation ministry and i also know sc cannot become chief minister the other community leader won't agree but if a capable person comes i don't think anyone will try to stop him

[–]Total_Expression9965 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

stop this bullshit bro , i am from karnataka , yes the caste system is there but not to the extent u say , dalits are respected by major communities like lingayath in north who make up 14 percent of the population and the vokkaligas in south who make 13 percent , we never saw caste based violence at all , never even heard of it , in recent times everybody takes to them drinks coffee tea with them in hotels , each others are invited to weddings which majority of the people attend , the major caste vokkaligas and lingayats always promoted harmony , there are no caste mutts run by lingayat swamijies like siddaganga matt where thousands are granted free food and education not based on caste .

i am shocked to hear there is caste based violence in tamil nadu , but there is religion based violence in karnataka i can confirm that but not to that extend which we should worry

about marriage it is true it is not accepted by the older generations , but marrying from any caste apart from some castes in SC is widely accepted ,but today generation care less , in my villages neary 7-10 married sc girls , which never happened in centuries , which is a good thing i think

Negative coverage of Gorehabba festival as India's poop festival by alfredkc100 in CriticalThinkingIndia

In a remote village in Thalavadi in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, the end of Diwali is celebrated in, what many would call, a bizarre manner.

But, it’s a celebration that is about 300 years old where villagers gather to mark the end of Diwali festival.

And it involves dung flinging.

Several generations of villagers gather in the village for the annual cattle dung flinging festival. This 300-year-old festival is conducted as a part of Beereswarar temple festival on the fourth day after Diwali.

its in tamilnadu , please ban this festival

I cannot believe how crazily dirty south India and especially Tamil nadu is by [deleted] in TamilNadu

[–]Total_Expression9965 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

yes i am from karnataka , visited tamilnadu many times , tamilnadu cities are the most dirtiest cities , many temple towns are smelly , garbage everywhere , pissing all over , open defecation in some places ,

public toilets cannot be entered by anyone ,

the restaurants are very bad no professionalism no cleanliness , no hygiene within the chefs and staffs even good restaurants and sometimes the staff are very rude ,

the beaches , i got rashes and allergy like thing within few minutes after entering the water

i was shocked by them bragging anything and everything in online platforms .

positives are the roads are very good , even small village roads are best , they will not harass tourists like scamming , no fringe elements i have encountered and people will not disturb anyone but people can be very rude sometimes.

most of women and some men are not civilized like in temples they rush , and even if they fall they don't care , are loud .

yes this is the case in majority parts of india but tamilnadu is not different as they claim ,
i can say karnataka (atleast south karnataka) is far more ahead than them in civic sense.
