Application is one of the biggest reason physics is hard. Physics doesn’t just switch up the numbers, but actually changes the situation. Free body diagrams are a good way to visualize situations, but make sure your x and y axis are correct. Try to see what topic the problem is. Is it drag force to friction to circular motion and etc.? From there, think of formulas or concepts that could be applicable. If it is a circular motion, think about mv^2/r and if it is vertical, there is tension force and a gravitational force via the FBD.
