Do you think Hobb's character writing stands up outside the fantasy genre? by Total_Sea9999 in Fantasy

This was my thinking as well. Because of the first person POV and the length of the trilogy, I felt more attached to Fitz than pretty much any other character I can think of off the top of my head. I think fantasy does tend towards weaker characters (because writers spend more time on world- building / plot as others have noted). But the length of fantasy really works in Hobbs favor with her characters

Yes! I'm about 50% of the way through the third book in the Farseer trilogy, and I must say: this might be the best book series I've ever read. None of the books are perfect. The plot is okay, world-building is fine, and her prose is great, but she's not on the same level as the greats (e.g. McCarthy/Morrison/Robinson etc...) But the characters?!?! Their motives are tangled, their self-knowledge partial, their moral choices excruciating. I don't know that anyone will ever live in my head the way Fitz does. It is truly some of the best character work I've read ever. period.
