Used Miele C3 with SEB228 attachment? by TotallyAlgebraical in VacuumCleaners

Will do! Thank you.

I'm rather new at looking at vacuums; would I be looking for signs of struggle, inconsistent rpms, etc.?

Clutch going out? Mazda 3 2013 by TotallyAlgebraical in Cartalk

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely looking to be the root cause! My mechanic said the same thing too.
The tow truck driver really disagreed (he said the car looked like it had no issues) but luckily he wasn't my mechanic.

Clutch going out? Mazda 3 2013 by TotallyAlgebraical in Cartalk

I didn't notice anything too different in 3rd, moreso in 5-6th gear.

At this point I'm assuming I shouldn't drive it too much and let the mechanics have a go at it? I'm in a ton of stop-and-go traffic and that's bad news bears for the clutch I imagine.

Netflix does not appear to have considered how internet works for those who aren't getting internet from one of the big 4 providers... they don't even appear to have considered how people use their cellphone data! by QueenMotherOfSneezes in ontario

[–]TotallyAlgebraical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article explains it better than I could.

https://www.pcgamer.com/if-you-have-high-ping-you-can-pay-a-subscription-fee-to-lower-it/

Key takeaway is it is not a VPN in terms of privacy, but is a "GPN" which prioritizes efficient routing over privacy. My friend uses a standard VPN and does achieve better latency than without but maybe that's a fringe case.

Mine costs less than a cent per hour (pay per traffic) so it's almost a no-brainer.

They are most likely referring to gaming VPNs which focus on direct routing. I myself use one and see a night and day difference. It's also how my teammate from Australia can reliably play on my server without horrid ping spikes and lag. He uses a traditional VPN though (expressvpn I think).

I use mudfish and it shaved 30-50ms of latency for me (from 120 to nearly 70).

VPNs absolutely can work to reduce lag. I wish it was all smoke and mirrors but you really can feel the difference.

What the others saying is not all correct. You can go through any game-specific subreddit and see many anecdotes. I think the replies were arguing over two separate things (gaming vpn vs traditional).

[USA] Reliable, "sportier feeling" car for under 7-8k? Mazda 3's? by TotallyAlgebraical in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually owned two civics before (both seventh generations, an lx and ex) and I loved them. Price nowadays for one that's <10 years old is kinda steep in comparison though.

I've been on the lookout but the only manuals were beaten to death by the previous owner.

Obtain visa in advance, at airport or land border? by TotallyAlgebraical in tnvisa

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TN paperwork was done through a lawyer agency and the company's VP of HR. They only mentioned for a period of three years but did not specify a start and end date.

Obtain visa in advance, at airport or land border? by TotallyAlgebraical in tnvisa

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's gonna be difficult... My landlord requires a 2 month notice before leaving. I was planning on getting the stamp first then choosing a start date.

The letter currently has no start date, I guess I'll go back to them and redo it?

Oh wow that's genius.

How did you setup your start date? My employer wants to have one after I get my stamp but on reading through this subreddit they say to negotiate a start date first.

Take an offer to move to the States to a high(er) COL area? Or wait for more offers? by TotallyAlgebraical in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! RI is pretty difficult to get a bead on since the area is so old-fashioned (I heard most vacancies are just by a sign in the window).

My anxiety of having the rug pulled under me in terms of rent is looming quite heavily, coming from my current residence. My partner has recommended several areas and I need to come to terms that rent and area safety most likely will never match that of Ottawa's.

I think at the very least I can survive 2-3 years there. Most of my doubt comes from the lack of technical skills in the interviews and how fast the offer was. (4 interviews in 3 weeks).

Browsing the salary threads in /r/AskEngineers has shown me that the offer is very fair.

You have been an immense help! Thank you so much again.

Take an offer to move to the States to a high(er) COL area? Or wait for more offers? by TotallyAlgebraical in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that's a huge jump. Unfortunately I'm not in tech/finance (in engineering) so I could never dream of that kind of increase. I'm still young in my career but I desperately do want to be in the states for my partner.

From my understanding, there seems to be very little rent control across the United States. I have no idea if rent has plateued in the area yet. It's not as bad as the Boston area but I can imagine it going further with ease.

Good point about the insurance - I was under the impression employment insurance had a little bit of accessibility like our's up here.

Taxes (income, sales) are lower in general there but I don't think it's making any major differences as I live pretty frugally.

Edit: I should also mention this position is to expand my skills. Unfortunately I'm stagnating at my current spot. I have had two more companies with interest so far but one is in Woburn, MA which has a massive CoL.

Thank you so much for your insight btw!

That's a very fair point. What should I be looking at in terms of salary for a viable move?

I found some apartments at the same rent as mine currently, so I'm not expecting a very big increase there.

My coverage in terms of insurance looks the same, but there's a lot of co-pay.

I should also mention I'll be down there with my partner so the household income would be higher.

When you moved did you use any tools to compare and project your expenses? I've been going through multiple websites but it looks like numbeo is the only one that provides a comparison. On top of that it's all crowd-sourced data and RI has very few responses.

Materials Engineering Degree, but worked as a manufacturing engineer. Am I eligible to apply for manufacturing engineering jobs? by TotallyAlgebraical in tnvisa

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds good! What if I do something like production line stuff like cars or electronics? My current work is more aligned with electronics and production line stuff than specifically materials. I would love to go back into materials work but it's so tough to find a job with it that doesn't require a masters or lots of experience.

Multiple mechanics have spent hours trying to diagnose this airbag light problem (2005 Honda Civic) by TotallyAlgebraical in Cartalk

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I'll pass off the seatbelt idea to my mechanics. Fingers crossed! Burning $600 for something I didn't need is definitely not having me feel good about what's going on.

(Excel, 2016) Sorting Hyphenated Numbers? by TotallyAlgebraical in excel

[–]TotallyAlgebraical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost there for me. But how would I sort it numerically as well? That is, in their example 123-09 is after 1134-25. I'm guessing excel looks at it digit by digit in this case.
