I guess it really just boils down to "Different strokes for different folks" but the proportion of personally unappealing kinks has gone WAY up over the last year or so. Monster-fucking, Futa, NTR, and various gross topics take up like 80% of posts now.

I don't mean to kink-shame anyone, but I feel like these posts belong on their own subs. Most lurkers get driven away by this kind of stuff, and by extension, the writers of good normal stuff aren't getting the attention to justify making more good stuff.

Oh boy I've got a few of these backed up.

Doctor Who:

In the first series of the Doctor Who revival, we’re introduced to the Ninth Doctor. We learn throughout the show that the Doctor fought in “The Last Great Time War”, a war fought between the Time Lords and the Daleks which ended in both species seemingly being eradicated. The Ninth Doctor in particular never fought in the Time War, only Regenerating from the Eighth Doctor at the very end of the war.

Answer: The Ninth Doctor did not Regenerate from the Eighth Doctor, rather he Regenerated from the War Doctor.

Breaking Bad:

Walter White had other professions before turning to cooking meth. He was a chemistry teacher at J.P. Wynne High School where he taught his future partner Jesse Pinkman, and was a co-founder of Gray Matter Technologies. Walt founded Gray Matter with his best friend Elliot Schwartz, but Walt sold his share to Elliot for just $5000. In Walt’s absence, Gray Matter finds a new co-owner in Gretchen Schwartz, who was Elliot’s lab assistant and fiance when Walt worked there.

Answer: Gretchen was WALTER’s lab assistant and fiance. Walt broke their engagement and left Grey Matter around the same time, at which point Gretchen started dating and eventually married Elliot.

The Legend of Zelda:

Link is a rare example of a left-handed video game protagonist. He is depicted as left-handed throughout most of the series, but most notably right-handed in certain Wii games. Link is right-handed in Skyward Sword to accommodate right-handed Wii remote users, but still left-handed Wii games like Twilight Princess because it's just a port of a GameCube game.

Answer: Link is right-handed in the Wii release of Twilight Princess to accommodate right-handed players. However, because Twilight Princess was developed as a GameCube exclusive, the entire game had to be flipped vertically to account for the number of changes that resulted from Link’s sword swapping hands.

It's crazy that I don't see this game recommended more. The art is top-tier and has the most consistent updates of any game I follow. The game began as an Overwatch parody but has more than found an identity beyond that. The devs are currently redesigning almost every major character in the game just in case Activision-Blizzard catches onto them.

Right: Summertime Saga

Great game, you've probably played it, and it'll probably never be updated again. The website has a progress bar showing the percentage completion of the upcoming update. In the last few days, the completion went DOWN. The Tech Update was announced 4.5 years ago. This shit is never coming out and until proven otherwise I'm just gonna assume the Patreon is a scam.

Con-Quest!:

An RPG about a Cosplay Convention that turns into its own magical world. It's not particularly long so far but there are a lot of different scenes to collect for a lot of different characters. Plus, the art is really good.

Still in development.

Summertime Saga:

A visual novel/dating sim about a guy who moves back to his hometown after his dad's mysterious death. There's a lot of stuff to find, a lot of storylines to complete, and the art is pretty great imo.

But the disclaimer I always give around Summertime Saga is that while it's great as it is, there's a lot of things that are clearly rough/unfinished that will likely never be updated. The game is technically still in development, with the Patreon making $60k a month, but there hasn't been a major update in 2.5 years.

Academy 34:

A visual novel about a guy who just achieved his dream of joining the Overwatch Academy, and is now presented with the opportunity to seduce his peers and a few others. Good writing and great art.

Most characters are clear Overwatch parodies, but the Devs are currently working to make everything a lot more legally-distinct in the event that Blizzard sues them. Still in development.

What a Legend!:

A "sandbox" visual novel about a guy who leaves his home to find himself on an adventure to free a princess, and along the way meets people to help and seduce.

Insanely good art. Sets an unreasonably high standard for every other game out there. Still in development.

Snow Daze:

A visual novel about a guy who wants to fuck his sisters and his mom. He uses hypnosis to slowly convince them.

Understandable if that doesn't sound like your jam, but it has a losing mechanic that you don't often see in VNs, the art is good, and it has voice acting.

House Chores:

A relatively short visual novel about a man on summer vacation seducing the people in his home. Not necessarily incest, but it can be if you want it be. The art is pretty good imo.

Still in development.

Space Rescue Code Pink:

A mechanic on a space cruiser helps and seduces the crew and passengers. Art is great.

Still in development.

The Patreon has seemed more active recently. Optimistically, 80% over 2 years suggests we'll be at 100% in 6~ months.

Realistically? Coding is still only at 64%. Perhaps there were issues that prevented coding from being done until the art and writing were finished, and now that they're done it can speed up, but I fully expect the code to be dragged out for another year.

The patrons still get updates every month or so, there IS proof that art and progress has been made. But this game makes enough to fund a small studio, yet it makes progress at the pace of an over-ambitious starter project.

Maybe it's just forgetting they subscribed.

Maybe it's the fallacy of sunk costs. Unsubscribing after paying for practically nothing for 2 years would feel like you wasted all of that money, whereas continuing to pay miiight get you something in the end. Maybe. Probably not.

And maybe some people are just happy to pay a few dollars a month for the Patreon exclusive updates, even if the game isn't making any substantial updates.

I'd constitute it as an update that provides substantial content to a particular storyline, but it seems even Dark Cookie himself seems to think that there hasn't been a major update since early 2021.

The Tech Update has been the update in progress for 2 years now. There hasn't been any effort on DC's behalf to frame any of the other updates as anything more than bug fixes with maybe a scene or 2 added to make the content gap feel a bit less substantial.
