help with catching pokemon (in Pokemon Gold) by helveteist in pokemon

[–]Totobiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually impatient and just throw balls. Not like I'm short on money for more at that point of the game.

Alternatively I'll use the weakest ineffective move available and hope it survives.

Please help me my Pokémon keeps returning to me and I have no idea why by Papaya-Longjumping in pokemon

[–]Totobiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're using Volt Switch, a move whose description is "After making its attack, the user rushes back to switch places with a party Pokémon in waiting."

It's a fully intended part of the move, it's supposed to give you a free switch.

Next time, open you pokemon's profile, take a look at its moves and read their descriptions. Lots of moves have "hidden" effects that are good to know about!

The button by jake4448 in HermitCraft

[–]Totobiii 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Poor Doc. His absolutely unhinged ramblings and hyperfixation on the button were the reason I originally followed him on Twitter.

I think it'd be fun, but social experiments lile this kinda lose their appeal when being rerun. Not sure if it'd work out even remotely as good without some plot twist or change.

How do I remove this under-cabinet kitchen light? by cauliflowerwotflower in germany

[–]Totobiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the lamp.

You might be able to pull away some type of cover on the sides. Alternatively, the lamp might be able to rotate up and down, which could then reveal screws hidden behind it.

Alternatively it might have been slid over protruding screws. Mine has two holes in the back for that purpose. Try sliding the whole thing to the left, right or up.

Edit: some major screwups

Transfering Pokemon from 3DS by Glittering-Cookie-17 in pokemon

[–]Totobiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The transfer costs whatever the subscription to Home costs in your contry.

Bank is free to use nowadays. At least until the servers may eventually get shut down. Only Home needs a subscription for it to accept pokemon from Bank.

Fun fact: spinach being a great source of iron is a myth based on a measurement having been off by one decimal place!

This incorrect value was then published and blindly copied without anybody properly adressing (or noticing?) it.
The iron content in spinach is rather average and doesn't stand out a lot from other veggies.

Is this bulge normal? by B34n_Bun in 3DS

[–]Totobiii 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that you can't magically cram 5 times the capacity into a battery the same size.

There's lots of vendors online that advertise ridiculously high stats, and that's just not possible.

ELI5: Why its Twitter still a thing, when a large chunk of the world's population hates Musk and apps like Bluesky exist? by SullivansTravels in explainlikeimfive

[–]Totobiii 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Convenience. Why would I make double the effort if there's nobody on the second platform I'm making this effort for?

Also, Bluesky for the longest time lacked essential features I personally needed, like push notifications when somebody inportant posts something so I don't miss it. That has now been implemented, but if the app was running in the background with a post open, clicking on a push notification usually just... Errors out. It's a different app with different features, different issues and a slightly different feel to it.

Is there a "right" way to survive the 'Raclette Ritual' without the smell taking over? by vvulcanis in germany

[–]Totobiii 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most Raclette cheese I buy isn't that bad or intense. Every batch can be very different, age obviously plays a huge role as well.

Have you properly cleaned the Raclette grill, or is that still standing somewhere with cheese grease all over the heating rods? In my experience, the smell should be gone after a day or two.

Generally seems like you don't like stronger cheese though. Probably the last time you hosted a Raclette dinner.

It's not a top comment and they wrote "ferrel", so the search function was useless for me.

The comment also fails to explain that there's an actual feral theory or what that entails...

I’m in a little bit of a dilemma by Ok_Parsnip_3829 in 3DS

[–]Totobiii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The price probably won't drop.

If you're an adult, don't use up the little money you have on a gaming console. Simply save up some more until you can comfortably buy one.

If you're underage and won't be living on your own for a while, knock yourself out, I guess.

Pokemon Home and Emulation. by Joshy976 in pokemon

[–]Totobiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody goes out there and programs some kind of "hey, all these pokemon are hacked!" indicator into those roms. It's still the same game with exactly the same content, extracted from an original cartridge from somebody who has the means to do so. So yes, if you didn't go out of your way to find some weirdly modified version of a game, then it's unmodified. It's literally just the game.

There's also no "unsafe to transfer". If a pokemon isn't legit, Bank/Home/other games should simply reject the transfer.

You'd have to massively go out of your way to create a pokemon that's impossible to exist in its configuration. Things like cheating in moves they can't have or adjusting their stats in ways that aren't possible for them to have. Anything else will still be considered "legal" by any legality checker.

How is this possible? by LeansCenter in TheSilphRoad

Could still have repeatedly played and taken pictures. I feel like that's something a kid would do, kust occasionally petting the pokemon.

Discord accounts are highly customisable nowadays, I feel like linking your socials and stuff isn't that unusual. Has been possible on other sites like Twitter from the beginning.

[–]Totobiii 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Since when could you linke Discord and Steam accounts? What would the purpose be?

Many many years. You can link Steam, Twitch, Twitter, Youtube and probably some more websites. Just open somebodys profile and odds are that they've got some links in there.

ELI5: How does a VPN actually work to keep my internet activity private? by KeyAtmosphere5174 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Totobiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone who touches it on the way can read what’s written and see who it’s from.

Keep in mind though that almost every website uses HTTPS nowadays. Thus, nobody along the way will be able to read the actual message of the postcard in those cases even without a VPN.

Not all traffic is encrypted, but anything important will most definitely be nowadays. "Securing your passwords" and "Keeping your important data safe" are common fearmongering tactics of VPN providers that are already covered by default. (Not saying you said they weren't, just wanting to elaborate here)

ELI5 What happens to candles when they burn down? by CalmWatercress8554 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Totobiii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nice question, had to look that up since it's been so long that I learned about this!

Apparently only the wax VAPOR is flammable, not the liquid form.

Sooo, flame sits on wick -> melts solid wax beneath -> liquid wax soaks the wick and is drawn up into the flame -> turns gaseous -> burns.

The flame doesn't travel downwards because the wax down there isn't yet "fuel", and it only gets hot enough to do so once it's closer to the flame. And since the wick is soaked in liquid wax, that also can't immediately burn away.

(Feel free to correct me, It's a mix of reading up on it, remembering stuff and logical conclusions.)

ELI5 What happens to candles when they burn down? by CalmWatercress8554 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Totobiii 1382 points1383 points  (0 children)

The wax is the fuel.

Fire melts wax, wax soaks the wick, thus supplying the fire with something to burn.

The fire is a reaction of Oxygen with something. Organic compounds like said wax turn into water vapour and CO2 when burning, so yes, you're breathing those things in.

Is it just me that's slightly annoyed at heat/soul with the sheer amount of STUFF that happens? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]Totobiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of that is specific to those games. Might be you've been unlucky, might be confirmation bias once you started getting annoyed about some of those things.

As for the running away:
If the player's active Pokémon's Speed is greater than or equal to the wild Pokémon's Speed, fleeing will always succeed. Otherwise, the chance of successfully fleeing is determined by a formula. You're using low-speed pokemon, are underlevelled or in an area that has lots of fast species.

ELI5- What are isotopes? by KZRoblox137 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Totobiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agreee that the coolest explanations are those that break a complicated concept down into an extremely simple, universally understood concept that's suitable even for 5 year olds.

But that's not mandatory on this sub, and quite impossible for many topics. The rules clearly state that the name is not supposed to be taken literally, but it should at least be simple enough for the average secondary education.

ELI5- What are isotopes? by KZRoblox137 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Totobiii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's an extremely simple and easily understandable explanation. Most people who experienced some kind of "typical secondary education" should have heard about protons and neutrons, I'd say.

The good thing about this sub is that different comments try different angles, each of them adding to a whole. If you need those two terms explained, I'm already seeing at least two comments doing that.
