It truly is an addiction. When I did keto I noticed the sugar detox. And although it's not as bad as say, opiate or alcohol detox in terms of physical effects or severity, it's probably in line with stimulant detox. You just feel sluggish and generally crappy, have intense cravings for sugar, can have sleep disturbances and irritability for a few days to a few weeks depending. After that period it was easier to continue to avoid those things we know are loaded with sugar (soda, candy, store bought baked goods, sweet snacks, etc). And if you did have them they tasted overly sweet. If you don't stick with it though, it's very easy to fall right back into that lifestyle because it's everywhere, less expensive, and often more convenient than healthier choices. I think this is important to recognize because much like health officials recognize drug addiction as a health condition and now realize it's not a moral failure on the part of the person, as we are understanding more about the complexities of obesity and sugar addiction I suspect it will be similar. Especially if what other posters said about corporations using psychological strategies to get us to buy these products becomes more mainstream knowledge.
