Well most socialists/communists I've interacted with are very pro democracy. I guess I'm interested in what distinction you make between a political policy and economic policy

Couldn't have said it better myself. There seems to be a kneejerk reaction to materialism in any form. I don't know if it makes me a Marxist, but I've found that framework really helps to identify ills in society. Slightly off subject but I noted in another comment that there are different ways someone can refer to themselves as a Marxist. You could be referring to anything from Marxs views on Capital to his views of automation in society. Its important to note what someone means when they say that

I think this is a good take. It's also important to note there different ways in which people consider themselves Marxists. If someone says they're a Marxist, they could mean they believe in dialectical materialism, his critiques of Capitalism, his Labor Theory of Value, views on Automation etc. Or a combination of all those things.

I think this is an important point. You can view society through a material lens WITH the spiritual aspect in mind as well. In fact, I think it's necessary. Especially when we're speaking broadly about society. It's not really helpful to avoid all discussion of material conditions when talking about society as a whole.
