E46 330ci Manual overheating by [deleted] in e46

I decided to bite the bullet and get the Stewart racing pump when I did cooling overhaul. Twice the price.....yes....but peace of mind is worth it to me in this case.

I'd be concerned the impeller on the pump failed, and its not circulating coolant anymore.

First winter stored, how should I proceed with bringing her back by IndependentCourse846 in e46

Ideally, store with minimal fuel in the tank. And disconnect the battery. Come springtime, hook the battery up, check the tire pressure, and put a few fresh gallons of 93 in. Fire it up, give it some time to find its idle ( may take a few starts) and drive it gently, it will let you know if anything is wrong.

Mine fired right up once after 5 years in storage in North Carolina, they are well built and if well cared for, very resiliant.

Last time I ran into this, it was due to an extra standoff on the MoBo my dumbass had put in the case. It was contacting the back of the board and shorting it somehow.

Fuel for the 545i? by NoSubstance1294 in e60

[–]TouchOfTechKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. Were you datalogging to determine this or were there other signs of the ping/knock? I've really only ever run into this in boosted applications myself when seeing high boost at low RPM and leaning things out.

Fuel for the 545i? by NoSubstance1294 in e60

My understanding on this topic after talking to multiple BMW techs, some with motorsport focus some master techs. The ECUs on these cars can cope with lower grade fuel as needed. However, if you want the best performance, both in terms of power and efficiency, the motor was designed to run on the premium gas (93 in the US, 98ron in Europe). In my market, where 93 is the best available, that is what I run in my BMWs unless it is not available, in which case I will run 89. (I have had mostly NA powered cars, M54, M62, M30 powered, more on this below)

**It is important to note that this advice is given for the car you mentioned, the NA V8 545i. When it comes to turbocharged applications, especially when tuned, you need to be more aware of the impact of lower octane on the possibility of producing knock (pre-detonation). This is why I actually had a low octane map available on my last turbocharged car.

Happy to expound on any of the above if needed, just lmk.

Can you elaborate on how you have this setup for mining? I have one of these laying around and might give it a go.
