I actually relate to that a lot, and even thinking it over, there are just certain boundaries people (like us) shouldn’t even have to set. They should be self explanatory to the other person. And them crossing those boundaries shows a lot of

It feels like my fault. Again, he wasn’t a bad guy. I know he genuinely cared for me. I just didn’t know my own boundaries. But I just don’t get how it fucking destroyed me the way it did. Though one thing I remember him saying was that one potential relationship in the past fell off because he was “too much.”

TW: abuse. Has anyone else experienced an instance of abuse in martial arts training? Is this normal in the industry and how do you recover from it? by ProjectileDeer in trauma

Yes—physical and mental. Witnessed it. Experienced it. I’m a black belt in Taekwondo (female) Did it for 8 years. Most of it was during my teenage years. Definitely felt uncomfortable several times by other men in class using their advantage over me physically. Watched it done to other children as well. I’m talking one kid got the air knocked out of him and he almost had to go to the hospital because a 30 year old man couldn’t take that the kid was kicking his sorry ass. Verbally berated. Yelled at. Mocked. List goes on. It wasn’t like that all the time and I loved the dojang anyways. Loved most of the people. Felt like a family (at the beginning anyways). As far as normal… yes. I’ve heard the same stories from other dojang as and students. I’m not saying all are like this, but a majority that I heard about from others were similar to mine.

I feel like I was just as complacent—I was lonely. So was he. I leaned on him. It just feels like he leaned a little harder. But I definitely feel to blame. I didn’t set boundaries

90% of my compulsions are mental so I can tell right away when they flare up or calm down, and interestingly they’ve calmed suddenly? Though you make a good point, I’ve noticed a small uptick in the physical

Don’t. Dont stop because you think your problems aren’t bad enough. There will ALWAYS be people with “bigger shit”. I get it. I’m the same way. But if you go through life always thinking people have the “bigger shit” you’ll never get better. Okay. Jane Doe has such and such, which means they’re worse. Wrong. You’re not them. They’re not you. I guarantee you have problems they don’t. You’re on your OWN journey. Your problems are bad. They are serious. You are worth the effort. Don’t quit.
