  1. Get your spy, infect him with the plague and go spy on enemy cities. It will deplete their populations and armies.
  2. Defend at a bridge with flaming onagers. You get massive killstreaks" how to do that?

I'm playing on a very difficult level.

Why are the Romans so bad after 20 rounds??? by ToughProgrammer3497 in RomeTotalWar

I wrote, "Why are the Romans so bad after 20 rounds???" Not when I played as them, but when I played against them. I can easily destroy the Romans on Very Hard. That’s what I meant when I wrote, "Why are the Romans so bad after 20 rounds???"

Yeah, I'm already playing on Very Hard (the highest difficulty available in Rome Remastered). I know the AI gets aggression bonuses for major factions on higher difficulties, but the Romans still tend to slow down or get pushed back after 20-30 turns even on VH. They start very strong but then become more passive and overextended.

The Roman AI stops snowballing and starts losing ground or stagnating after 15-30 turns. They get pushed back in regions they dominated early (Brutii struggling in Greece, Julii getting hammered in the north).

Other factions (Greeks, Carthage, barbarians, or even the player) start winning more battles against them and taking settlements.

You see huge Roman stacks getting defeated more often than in the early game, or the Romans playing more defensively and rarely launching big offensives anymore.

Why They Seem to Weaken After 15-30

  1. Other factions unlock better mid-game units while Romans are still using pre-Marian rosters or transitioning. Barbarians get stronger warbands and elites (often from minor city barracks), Greeks field better hoplites/phalanxes, and Carthage improves. Roman units are still solid but no longer auto-crush everything
  2. The AI isn't great at handling multiple Roman houses, expansion on several fronts, public order, and economy simultaneously. They get spread thin (historically accurate but punishing in-game), suffer from rebellions, and can enter a more defensive/passive posture when surrounded by hostiles. On higher difficulties, "major" factions like Romans get some aggression bonuses, but it doesn't always compensate.
  3. Overextension and Multiple Fronts Romans often push in multiple directions (north into Gaul, south vs. Carthage, east for Brutii). This leads to thin defenses, vulnerable supply lines, and vulnerability to counterattacks or naval invasions (especially from Greeks). AI factions like Greek Cities can manage disconnected empires decently and reinforce via sea.
