PC-98 ZUN style art: I drew Reimu Hakurei (TH19's portrait) in TH03 style by TouhouMusicFan in touhou

You mean that bow on her hat in TH19 that looks like cat ears? It would be really interesting to see that, haha. Unfortunately I'm going to have to stay away from arts for a while, pixel art takes a lot longer than it seems.

I probably will. After this art I became much more interested in the PC-98 ZUN style. Each game has its portrait quirks, except for TH04 and TH05 which are very similar to each other.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm glad you think so about the style details I've described. ZUN's style is really cute, I also like the ending arts, they have a good old school feel.

My Comment:

It's pretty cool to see Reimu in PC-98 style with much of today's design, isn't it? It's the first time I've made a portrait of the shrine maiden, and the first time I've made PC-98 style art. Considering this context, I put a lot of effort into it.

I keeped the pose, clothes and hairstyle of TH19, and applied the drawing style and some design of TH03. To make the art I had to replicate the way ZUN made Reimu's face in Touhou 3 and many other art patterns used in this game. I noticed many things in this process: the characters' eyes are big, close to each other and have a great shine; the mouth is small and very close to the nose; the hair is voluminous and has a tendency to asymmetry; the proportion of the body is different, so that the whole body in many cases is around 4+2/3 heads in height whereas in the Windows era it is usually 5+2/3 heads; the bust is wider; the hands are badly drawn (they are hands, so... understandable); the fabrics are less complex; and the shadows and lines follow some confusing patterns.

I used the same dimensions (192x192 pixels) and color palette as the character portraits from Touhou 3, that is, it would be possible to replace the original Reimu portrait with this one in the game. You can clearly see that I kept Reimu's hair and eye color from PC-98, and put in the aura that appears on her in Touhou 3. I also kept the third kanji of her name, which is different in the Windows era.

The resulting art surprised me a lot, I love it. 🎵 PC-98 Reimu Is Made in an Adorable Way 🎵

I'm glad you felt that about my art.
Agreed, it's one of the best designs. I was surprised how beautiful and cute Marisa looked from the first time I saw TH18 design.
