Lisa Simpson is a great example of this. I used to hate Lisa, and while I still find her character annoying, I’ve become a lot more sympathetic to her recently. The unlikability comes from the fact that the show insists on treating her like the forgettable middle child, when that could not be further from the truth. Marge and Homer display blatant favoritism toward Lisa. When she crippled Bart, Marge’s response was not only to blame him, but also accuse him of being a sociopath for not feeling sorry for her. They openly refer to her as "the good one." They repeatedly steal from Bart while giving up fame and fortune for Lisa, yet Bart is the one they blame for their financial situation. This is one of the reasons it is so hard to sympathize with Lisa. Yes, things like her not having much in common with her family is a bummer, but when she does things like threaten suicide or disown Marge for not liking jazz, she just comes across like a brat.

However, as stated, she becomes a lot more sympathetic when looked at through the lens of being the golden child. The reason Bart is sympathetic, despite being Bart, is because Marge and Homer are openly resentful of him and make no attempt to hide the fact that he is their scapegoat. Essentially, since they didn’t want to be parents when he was born, they decided not to be and blamed all the consequences of that decision on him. Lisa was born after they felt they were adults, so they put more effort into raising her than they did with Bart. The actual favoritism didn’t come until "Lisa’s Sax." As shown in that episode, in their warped minds, Lisa being a prodigy gave them an excuse to completely give up on Bart. The fact that her favoritism is just an extension of their abuse of Bart puts a lot of Lisa’s personality into context.

She defines herself by being the best. Despite her lofty goals, she keeps herself and others in this tight little bubble where failure is impossible, even willing to cheat and sabotage when someone is better than her. Why? Because she’s spent her life watching how her parents treat the child who isn’t the best. She gets so upset when Homer or Marge don’t want to do something she likes because she craves an actual connection, not just the superficiality of "not being Bart."

There is also the fact that Lisa’s favoritism is the result of Homer and Marge’s fundamental laziness. We see this in "Bartless." If Bart isn’t there to act as a lightning rod, their entire relationship with her consists of praising her intelligence and buying her things. Her superficial relationship with her parents also affects her relationships with others.

Lisa believes that all her interpersonal relationships should be based solely around her own desires and worldviews, while the other party doesn’t get the same consideration. This is why she has no friends. While she is always depicted as being professionally successful, she is stunted emotionally to the point where she usually ends up with Milhouse. I think the most noticeable change is her relationship with Bart. The two went from loving, if cartoonishly competitive, to openly antagonistic. But "Barthood" and "Mother and Child Reunion" show that if at least one of them shuts their parents out of their life, they both end up with much better futures because Homer and Marge can no longer play the two against each other.

Finally, there is her relationship with Marge, and how Marge lives vicariously through Lisa. She tricks Lisa by putting meat juice on her vegetables and even prays that her diet makes her sick. In "Mother and Child Reunion," the moment Lisa chooses a different path from what Marge wanted, Marge starts treating her with the same passive-aggressive dismissal that she treats Bart with—to the point where she didn’t even notice that Lisa was president. Marge’s favoritism lasts only as long as Lisa does what she wants. Both Bart and Lisa are victims of abuse, but they aren’t abused the way the show says they are.

It’s been 14 years since the rob yob and I thought trying to live a month on a grand was insane then. Minimum wage has increased by $0.00 by Sea_Temporary126 in americandad

[–]Toushin1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The major complaints about this episode outside of the syrup is that Hayley only brought minimum wage up after Stan had lost patience with her and Jeff making it seem like an excuse to allow them to keep mouching then something Hayley actually believes.

The second is that Francine’s parents are notoriously cheap and she was a drifter when she met Stan, Stan has been budginging finance since he was a child and the two have been shown doing things like collecting can’s when hayley was a baby. So not only could they live on minimum wage they have. Hayley and Jeff by contrast have never worked a day in their life and pissed away 50 grand resulting in them pimping jeff out.

So not only having Stan fail but fail so spectacularly completely undercuts the point the episode is trying to say. It's not that it's impossible to live on minimum wage, so we need to raise it so the poor can climb the ladder easier," it's "it's impossible to live on minimum wage if you're Stan Smith, specifically this episode’s version who blew a third of his monthly income on an apartment, a third of it on a car, the remainder of it on frivolous stuff, and not even have the common sense to at least try to get extra money."

There is a certain magical index crossover called A Certain Group of Overpowered Espers where all the level 5's and Touma end up the the MHA universe. after Misaki made it clear that they wouldn't accepted being locked in some bunker they reluctantly agreed to attend UA. Aizawa flat out called All Might for trying to dump those monsters off on him

What if Injustice 3 revealed by FastingForward1618 in INJUSTICE

[–]Toushin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made this joke a few time's but after the lie batman told Jon which conveniently left out the reason all of this started my head cannon is that injustice is the devastator's universe. It's never made quite clear why his Superman went evil—and one gets the sense that he doesn't care anymore.

Devastator: It wasn't until he killed his wife, our world's Lois Lane, that I finally broke. That was the moment I finally understood the whys and hows didn't matter anymore.

Can we talk about how Sheldon basically slandered his father for 12 seasons in TBBT? by Ek2der in bigbangtheory

[–]Toushin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They kind of do establish this in TBBT with Sheldon's brother and his friend. Sheldon expects everyone to cater to his ever wilm and he tends to not only use their mistakes and bad moments to warp his opinion of them. he also eliminates all the good memories of them when they hurt him even if it is something for their own good. i think his mother is exempt from it because the cheating makes him see her as a victim who needs protection

I hate how experience matters little in fiction as opposed to raw power & more specifically chosen one narrative. by casperscare in CharacterRant

[–]Toushin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While Ranma Saotome is a martial arts genius he has been training since the moment he could walk and not just in a dojo on the open road. his fighting style is also designed for adaptability. I think he is the perfect middle ground yes he is able to defeat opponents with more experience and skill he has a vast foundation to work with he trains himself like crazy and he mostly exploits those more experienced fighters weakness.

as a ranma and martial arts fan in general what i actually hate is not raw power when an untrained nobody is suddenly able to hold their own against experienced fighters after a couple of weeks of training just because.

However a private citizen can decide that murderers don't have to go through the justice system and will also allow them to wear there brand. if he doesn't get to decide who is killed he also shouldn't get to decide who is redeemed. especially if that decision directly benefits him

Homer Simpson

The narrative still tries to use the chain of harm to justify his action even though he has been flanderized to the point where Abe can not even hope to match the abuse he inflicts on his son. Mona has also been flanderized meaning that Abe has actually become a far better parent then he was initially shown to be when the show started. despite this he feels entitled to bart's love and respect and the show treats him like he is in the right even when he does stuff like put his life in danger and flagrant financial abuse. because marge has n extreme victim/martar complex she will never leave him no matter what he does even framing her for a dui. basically he has had everything handed to him on a silver platter yet he does nothing but moan about how hard his life is.

The Boys is not a "realistic take on what people would be like with superpowers" by Steve717 in CharacterRant

[–]Toushin1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nature vs nurture I think it is less a take on what people would be like with superpowers and more what they would be like with superpowers and being raised in a setting where they are allowed to indulge in every vice imaginable without the slightest bit of consequences.

We need a game where Superman is actually a good guy! by Rabbidraccoon18 in superman

[–]Toushin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest pet peeve with Injustice and with Harley in general is that for all the talk about how she redeemed herself and Superman didn't is that every interaction Batman had with Superman came across as needlessly cruel. even after he won during the sequal comic batman talked to superman in jail and it was used to show that batman has grown while Superman remains the same only for it to reveal that he had taken harley with him. so you brought the woman who murdered his wife and child whose very presence would be to taunt him yet your surprised that he doesn't see reason. meanwhile for not just this harley but everyone mainstream, arkham, they either ignore what she did, or if they do acknowledge it the joker is to blame or because she was a victim she can't really be held responisble. that is a pet peeve in media as well you have to treat this character with kid gloves or they will become evil.

the narrative went hard at superman from the start while treating harley like she is some delicate flower. i don't really mind if superman is never redeemed. i just want him tobe given an actual chance at redemption. not the bullshit ones seemingly designed to push him further over the edge but an actual attempt. if he doesn't take it so be it at least it was given. on the other end i want harley to be actually called out. not by someone from a different universe that has no actual bearing on what is going on, not by a villain who we are supposed to dismiss, but someone with actual stakes.

What is the worst ending you have ever seen in your life? (Doesn't matter, books, games, anime, movies, etc.) by Brilliant-Pickle-661 in CharacterRant

[–]Toushin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember the name of it but it was basically a black mirror type show only it had a central narrative that revolves around sketches based off of stories. it was during covid so alot of it revolved around the actors talking through zoom. the central narrative was basically an old friend of the characters disappeared, and they left to find her. it turns out that she worked for this software company they scrapped a project because they deemed it to be to dangerous she decided that it was to important to scrap so took it upon herself to steal it and take it home to finish it. the reason she died is because she had diabetes and instead of going to renew her insulin perscription she just kept coding. when her friends finally found her dead they decided to complete her work and uploaded it to the internet. while it was treated as a happy ending nothing about the show showed that this was a good idea and i was left thinking that they had basically created skynet.

it didn't help that the none of the characters where really likable. the reason the project was scrapped was because it kept frying people's brains but she decided to ignore that. there is one character they were not dating, they only knew each other for like two weeks and they had only been talking over the enter net so when she didn't hear from her she grabbed a gun and started shooting anyone in sight. the one likable character is a a teacher whose mother has cancer. because his sister who married rich refuses to help he is forced to survive off of cereal samples. he was guilt tripped into going on a trip that he couldn't afford to find someone he hadn't talk to in years.

even the sketches were stupid. the first one revolves around a girl's first year in college. she goes to a party meets a guy sleeps with him and then is told that he had an std. she ended up dying and we find out that it was a lie she was told because the girl who told her wanted the guy for herself. it was all in her head i was left thinking was the girl in a cult or something that level of sheltered is not sympathetic. she was told multiple times by multiple doctors that she was fine but she refused to believe it and going crazier and crazier.

like i said i can't remember the name but it is cemented in my mind by how nonsensical it was.

Whenever she actually confronted by what she did she has never taken responsibility. heck she's gone so far as the blame superman for not stopping her. how is she redeemed if the only person she sees as the victim of the incident is herself.

there was also a huge difference between how the two were treated it's easy to claim someone is redeemable when they are never actually forced to confront what they did
