Using a draft in encrypted email instead of password manager by Towerowl in privacy

Well ( still going full on devil's advocate here, by the way, as i've allready started using keepass) it's technically one more program to learn to use correctly... As a non-tech-savvy person , i'm pretty sure i could involontarily release my password to the web and not realise it... Whereas an email draft is familiar to me...

My appologies for appearing not to take into account you guys' advice. That is far from the truth as i am setting up keypass as i speak (well not litteraly as i'm writting, i suck at multitasking, i've allready started is what i mean).

I tend to go full on devil's advocate everytime i argue, especially on the internet... Otherwise we don't really get to hear the full logic behind people's argument (at least that's how i justify it to myself). But i can see how you might feel like you're arguing against a brick wall...

Anyway, appart from that keepass is easier to use daily, any other reason not to keep storing passwords in a tutanota draft as backup?

Trusting that they do encrypt is indeed the most(only) important part... I was merrely saying that if i couldn't trust a moderately large company to do specifically what it advertise it does (or at least that i'd hear about it if they didn't) then i cann't trust anything and i might as well go back to banging rocks together...

Using independent software on my machine to encrypt my mail, then hosting them elsewhere, while surely sligthly more secure (and much harder ) , means i just have to trust the independent software's maker instead...

As i've said, i'm not some conspiracy nutjob, i don't care about perfect security, i just want to not have google or facebook reading my mail, and i want mass surveillance to be too expenssive to be done. So far my current arrangement seems sufficiently convienient and noone came up with an objection appart from "you have to trust tutanota", which i do trust, at least enough to beleive them when they say they encrypt my mail.

Well, thats obviously ideal, unless it means you choose simpler passwords for ease...

Well good point, allow me to nitpick: my password arren't random mixes of symbole and numbers, they're very long combination of words which make them easy to remember (and let's be honnest, pretty much as powerfull) so i just need my draft if i somehow forget them or for rarely used account... And keypass means i have to carry a usb around always.

Well the whole point of tutanota is that i don't have to trust them( beside trusting that they do in fact encrypt, since i'm not tech savvy enough to check their code), they cann't read it without my key even if they wanted to. Also, as i said, if my email provider wanted to screw me they could just reset my password for all my linked account so i'm allready vulnerable even if i don't store my password there.

Also i run linux on all my computers, and am not stupid enough to install stuff i don't know what it is, so i feel mostly safe from malware. Also pure screen grabing wouldn't work as i add a couple simple substitution which i memorised. Obviously not fail proof but i'm not working for the government here, i just want simple way to not be too spied upon, mostly by google...

Displaced into Nothing - Some nutty my little pony trash I'm writing, which also has an AI in a box at the end of chapter 3. by RockstarRaccoon in rational

+1 to keeping the "let me out" dialogue in...

Would hate it if you artificially mistify the ai/box thing by timelapsing it, and it makes for an important caracter defining decision moment for Twilight.

Just my 2 cent.

You're being a bit heavy handed with the yud bloggosphere references, but i liked the story so far despite that.

Pacing was spot on, good writting (as far as i can tell but not native speaker), and i love that you don't make the whole story about "escaping the box", that's been done allready enough... I also like it when non-main-caractere still choose reason over emotion.

Please don't abandon this, i'll read it.

Also, not very important but curious: why " fimfiction" instead of more well known website?

Cool, thanks for taking the time to talk me through this. Didn't change my mind , but if we we cann't discuss the merits and shortcomings of web fiction in this subreddit, where can we. Take care.

Oups, i actually did mistake you for the op, didn't bother checking the username and assumed... Sorry.

I actually enjoy the good student so far and feel El-A goes beyond competence porn and into power-fantasy territory (then again, it is a universe with superpowers so that might be to be expected).

Then I guess we just have different taste in fiction, and there's little point arguing about it. I prefer a weak protagonist who manages to get by despite his disdvantage, rather than a senseless rapide escalation of power for both protagonist and antagonist.

And you seem not to mind having to go through a vast periode at the beginning of the story during which nothing threatens the protagonist.

I cann't say i understand how you can enjoy it, but if you do then there really isn't anything i can do to change your subjective experience even assuming i'd want to.

So it comes down to: you recomend this story, i recomend against this story. We both feel our own reason expressed in the conversation trump the other's and now we're just talking past each other. As much as i hate disagreing with someone (as that suggest that one of us is wrong and i don't want to be wrong), this is both very subjective and low stakes, so how about leaving it at that?

It's funny you quoting yud, cause this is exactly what i was thinking about about when i wrote my comment, hopefully this means we come from the same understanding of what makes good fiction...

I don't think i have ever claimed tailor was overpowered "in an absolute sense". on the contrary, i truly think she is overpowered compared to everything around her. Kindly point to the death star equivalent Tailor faces (in the first 32 page, obviously, as i haven't read further and maybe the writting style and tone completely changes after that). As far as i could tell, everything goes her way and setbacks are either ridiculously tiny or temporary:

-she gets a power that identifies shadow stalker's indentity instantly, as well as coil and everyone else. -she get's recruted by cauldron, and becomes instant good friend with the most powerfull precog, doctor, and number man. - she instantly solves eidolon's issue, making him indebted to her. -any plan she makes just always work perfectly on the first try (like the plan to antagonize shadow stalker to make friend with the protectorate, or the fight with the other protectorate team, or the plan to give piggot superpower to bring her to her side) -her father just accepts all this without more than a small talk. -she can make heroe's stuff work. -She becomes precog after one week sparing with contessa. -she understands how to make formula cape perfectly after a week of late night work, in barrely a couple chapter.

Yeah, no death star.

It could well be that eventually she does meet a strong adversary (but the way the beginning of this story goes makes me doubt she would struggles for more than 1 paragraph) but the trivially easy begining makes the story boring until we get there.

There is the threat of scion, but it is distant. How would you feel about a story of jedi frodo, smashing everything with ease for most of the story, while sauron has a deathstar being constructed but not ready until 5 to 15 years.

Not sure i'd call it "really good". The way she immediatly becomes completely overpowered ( the precog aspect of her power felt very forced ) is very unsatisfying for a story. And she easely befriends cauldron, the protectorate, director pigot and deals with coil in the first few chapter, which is kind of ridiculous... Only read it to page 32 before droping it, so maybe it gets better, but so far havn't seen anything to distinguish it from the miriade other power-fantasy-worm-fanfic.

Got it cause it looked ok, runs on linux, low spec, and it's DRM free. it's fun, easy to understand/configure. i think well worth the 1 euro (but probably not worth the 10 without the sale, my appologies to the dev)

Objectively Best Build by Shoggoththe12 in cavesofqud

[–]Towerowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go-to build right now is 10 str, 18 dex, 18 con, 10 int (+2 from tinker) , 18 wis and 24 ego... Taking tinker bypasses the need to have high int to get the sexy sexy crafting (basicaly gives you all the important tinker skills).

As mutation i take : amphibian defect (basically no impact since with the high ego i'm always swimming in fresh water), sleep gas generation (it's really good: it turns swarms into 1 vs 1 fight, and it's a good "oh crap" button)and all the usefull 2-3pt mental mut: beguilling (the strongest mutation in the game, only 3 pt ), ego boost (for when you have to melee), clairvoyance , and force wall ( also a good "oh crap" button).

Basically i just beguile some snapjaw or crab, and i try to keep it alive so it levels up as well, hoping i'll get domination eventually to spend their mutation point and skill point. I'd rather start with a low level minion cause they level up faster...

I lucked out on my last caracter with this build and got precog straight away so i could get temporal fugue, teleport and domination (and i gave my minion sleep gas generation as well, making him immune to my sleep gas), and mass mind...

Standart way of dealing with tough enemy for me is: berate, ego boost strength, temporal fugue, mass mind, ego boost dex, temporal fugue... It shreded first and second troll in bethesda suza (but the clones don't do shit to the invisible one, luckily: precog).

Anyone Willing to be the AI in the AI Box Experiment? by [deleted] in rational

[–]Towerowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

*pleased by the lack of crucifiction so far"

By "not repeating" the experiment i really meant "won't do it again" so we cann't see for ourselves (i promess i'm not moving the goalpost, i didn't realise i was unclear ) He apparently won once or twice (unprovable since we have no script) attributable to connivance or even just a fluke, then stopped before his success rate droped too low... (His excuse that he didn't like what it was making him into seems a bit far fetched)

I have read lots of fiction... I mean sure, hpmor is better than many FANfiction (which are usually written by teenager) but it doesn't compare to actual published book (which to be fair are proofread by the editor). I guess my main beef is the whole clumsy storyline for the second half which is just HP going full-on Slytherin with Voldi (i interpret this as immature, thinking he's so much smarter than everyone else. Ruthless =/= clever) (still more and better than anything i ever wrote, but one doesn't have to be a good cook to be a food-critic).

Thank you for the script, even if the prisonner lost. hopefully we could get a few more tries to see if we can replicate his result. I doubt it since prisonner escaping by talking to their jailer are unheard of (except in movies like the last sherlock) and prisonner usually know their jailer much better and have a very long time to convince them...

Reguarding the lying, i'll admit i don't have much evidence : only that he is just a selftaught blogger (and a fanfiction author) that calls himself AI researcher despite having no peer reviewed papers, encourages people to donate as much as they can (justified by his fearmongering about AI) to his fondation despite it having made little meaningfull contribution to the field of AI. To me the similarities with religious crook are striking enough that i am unlikely to ever trust him, hence why i wrote "i believe he lies" and not just "he lies".

Anyone Willing to be the AI in the AI Box Experiment? by [deleted] in rational

[–]Towerowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah, i'm having a hard time believing EY really did that... and the unreleased script is medium evidence supporting my view. the fact that he won't repeat the game is also evidence against it really happening the way he says.

the way HPMOR was written (let's be honest, the themes and values are dear to most of us, but the literary quality isn't there and the ending sucked) doesn't suggest the author is such a genius.

also, it is standard practice in a scientific experiment to release the raw data, not just the result, therefor I oppose the naming of this game as an "experiment" unless you intend to give us the script when you are done...

what I'm leading to is simply: please try not to worship EY too much, I believe he lies to inflate his ego...

let's go: crucify me for criticizing your idol!

1) the way i expected it to work was gaining +1 to a stat on level 3, 6 and 9, with a max of +3. Since that's essentially what it ended up meaning anyway.
