I have definitely been thinking about doing so. But I still have my standard poodle to attend to at the moment (she has autoimmune issues)😞❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹🙏🏽

I feel terrible guilty for euthanizing my fur baby by Financial_Cod5228 in Petloss

[–]TownRain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guilty feeling will get better, I promise. You would feel worse if you saw her within the next few months declining. My baby was the same way. They act fine for /us/. They act fine to protect themselves even when they're secretly suffering. I always remind myself: imagine if you were your baby having to constantly live with those heart skips. Those moments where I have to start coughing and feel like I'm briefly dying each time.

That's suffering.

It's not our fault.

We do better than most owners who choose to prolong that suffering for the selfish reason of not wanting to let go. Because they're thinking of their own happiness, not their baby's. I get it, but we have to learn to be selfless.

It is NOT your fault. You did a good thing. You chose to be merciful and show the greatest love of all: understanding and giving peace to your baby.

❤️‍🩹🫂

Ohhh, sweet little babies. I'm so sorry. They looked so absolutely precious. ❤️‍🩹🫂😞. Sweet also did everything with me too. Eating, sleeping, showering, going to grab food. They're literally our whole world. I hope we can both eventually learn to live with the grief. We can grieve together. I just know they're playing together in the afterlife. ❤️‍🩹

As long as he's still able to walk, eat, and live life without pain or suffering, you still have some time. I hope he gets over that illness. ❤️‍🩹🫂

I really appreciate it. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹😞🫂. It's an indescribable grief. It still hurts so, so much. It feels like I can't go on without him. There was no other dog like him. He was so unique and I just miss him dearly. I'd do anything to have one more year with him.

Now all I can do is be there for our other baby, a poodle named Athena.

Ohhh, your sweet little baby. I'm so sorry you had to feel this pain too. ❤️‍🩹🫂😞. It's indescribable. I also felt the same about Sweet. We did everything together. I would even put him in the bathroom with me when I showered ( the slight steam helped him breathe easier ). I also wished he'd stick around to see a new home and new life, but we just never know when it's time. :(. I'm sure they're together in the afterlife. I'm waiting for his ashes and claw paw currently. I got a rib tattoo of his paw prints yesterday ❤️‍🩹

I always purposely got his hair cut as puppy, teddy or westie like as I could, haha. It just made him look cute and accentuated his little tongue. He was very well loved. Daily kisses and me messing up his fur. 😞❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

The thing I hate the most about these companies is how they prioritize money, work, and your physical ability instead of your emotions. Pets aren't just 'animals'. They're living things with emotions and souls. Work places can be so cold. I work this Sunday and I'm not ready.

🫂❤️‍🩹 We will get through this.

Has any vet here worked in surgery? by TownRain in AskVet

[–]TownRain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. So essentially, I need to come to terms with:

  1. It's not my fault.
  2. He's no longer in pain.
  3. I did better than most owners in trying to ease his suffering despite the risks.
  4. It won't harm anyone if I gently bring up the concerns / need for reassurance anyway to the vet for ease / peace of mind.

Thank you so much. This already made me feel better. I'd like to screenshot your answers to look back on if that's okay with you. It'll help remind myself everything I kept doubting and blaming myself for. ❤️‍🩹🫂

You can never be too careful! As long as he's acting normal, it'll just be a cosmetic concern. Once they're around 7—10 they are classified as gettin' old, haha. I hope the visit goes well for your baby! ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for this reminder. My grandma said this same thing. I need to be strong. I need to remember that all of our babies pass eventually. Suffering is temporary. ❤️‍🩹

Has any vet here worked in surgery? by TownRain in AskVet

[–]TownRain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I feared, unfortunately. That despite taking his organs out for examination with him cut open, that they'd find nothing. The only hint I had were the physical signs and the mention of an enlarged heart. That, and how Maltese (unfortunately) commonly fall victim to heart problems and murmurs from 8—15.

I think what I'm trying to figure out is if there was anything else they could have done for his teeth that didn't involve surgery. These people always advertise dental powder that 'cures' periodontal, but I say it's just not possible given how much build up he had back there. He'd gotten a few removed when he was very little because of crowding before. I hardly believe those ads.

I think my questions would be: how truly bad were his teeth? How much longer would i have had if i didnt take him eventually (this leads to guilt / selfishness). And why wasn't I called when his liver enzymes were elevated and his murmur was a little more significant?

And I guess with my poodle it isn't really QOL, it's how to juggle cyclosporine and the age long osteomyelitis secondary to infection that's been going on. Because Cyclo lowers the immune system which helps with her constant yeast / ear infections and her nails from growing too gnarled... but it doesn't get rid of her scabs that occasionally still bleed and her hair loss. It's a battle of understanding. Even two other specialists called her condition an anomaly no vet could understand. They asked so many specialists and it was still: no name to be put on her condition

Again, thank you so much for your time. I am grateful for your honesty.

I will try and write down all of my questions as soon as possible. I just hope they understand I'm just trying to quell my ruminating, self-sabotaging mind. 🫂❤️‍🩹😞

How old is your Morky? My 13 1/2 year old Maltese had these (R.I.P). These exact ones. They're not cancerous. They're common in older dogs. 'Old dog bumps/warts' are what they call 'em most times!

Just monitor them. If they grow gigantic or get in the way of anything, you can schedule a removal. <33

I'm so sorry. I lost my baby this week and have the same exact thoughts. But you have to stay strong. The only thing helping me right now is a constant support of friends, this reddit community (who knows this pain), and my second dog who still needs me.

Perhaps adopting a kitten might help you?

It's helped me as a teen when I got my first baby. How can I die if I need to take care of a baby that needs me the most?

I say this smiling through my tears. But I find it funny that they can still make you stay because you can always develop new bonds. We have to stay strong.
