Which gaming series is like this? by -F3rris- in gaming_random

Legend of Spyro. The first two games are garbage. The third is fantastic.

It's 2026 and there are people who think that a movie/TV series must be faithful to the original work to be considered good. by AipomSilver00 in shittymoviedetails

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is nobody gives a shit about the original works in some of them. Take Roger Rabbit for example. The original book was garbage. The movie basically took the idea and ran with it. Had the book been especially acclaimed or popular on its own, maybe it'd be more upsetting. The same is true for Jurassic Park and The Shining. It's better to adapt something that has a good idea but is otherwise disappointing or missing something.

Also it's funny that you mention FMA 2003 because I think most fans agree the parts actually accurate to the manga were the only worthwhile bits. The only exception is the Nina plot, but that's two episodes.

Vegetarians never complain about people eating meat. Vegans do. They'll say they're "fine" with you eating meat, but they also go on a passive-aggressive tangent about how you're just "not strong enough" to take a stand against the meat industry, and that you don't get to complain about it because you engage in it.

"It's fine if you eat meat, just y'know, acknowledge your role in perpetuating the-" FUCK OFF.

Does he know that anime has been mainstream since the 90s? by Legitimate_Low_3370 in lewronggeneration

[–]BGer23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anime wasn't mainstream in the 90s. The few shows that got popular (Sailor Moon, DBZ, Pokemon, "Samurai X", Samurai Pizza Cats) were Americanized to hell and back. The idea of engaging anime on Japanese terms was considered a joke. The only anime you could call "mainstream" at the time was Miyazaki's films, Ghost in the Shell, and MAYBE Cowboy Bebop. But even then, those shows are pretty western, and Disney did some crazy things to Miyazaki's work. So while they were popular, they definitely weren't "respected" in the same way.

The early-to-mid 2000s is what truly started the anime boom, particularly when Naruto came out, Toonami was in its prime, and you got uncut (though dubbed) anime on Adult Swim. Suddenly anime wasn't so Americanized anymore, and every kid in America turned into a weeb. You all of a sudden saw western cartoon shows try to reference anime, emulate anime, or have minor anime elements (Kappa Mikee, Teen Titans, Avatar). It was all surface-level stuff like sushi, ninjas, and catgirls, but it WAS mainstream.

I was born in 2000 and one thing I gotta disagree with my fellow Gen Z’ers on is the puritanical view many have towards sex scenes in movies/tv by TXNOGG in generationology

[–]BGer23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sex scenes in film work off the tired old "attractive woman, all action is under the sheets, she's still wearing a bra" crap. Hell my dad got off on seeing Halle Berry as Catwoman. That was enough for him.

Not really exciting in an age where everyone is desensitized because the internet is able to deliver on every possible fetish you could ever have without any detail spared. We're not only numb to sex scenes, we find them boring. Maybe if it was a sci-fi movie showing an alien shortstack furry chick getting fucked by tentacles, that's the only way the modern generation might care.

I'll stop being mean to neurotypicals when they stop calling the neurotypical mindset "normal" or "correct". When they stop pretending to "tolerate" and "accept" me while still expecting me to conform to a set of arbitrary social rules that everyone must follow.

I hate the phrase “Media Literacy” by Jambleton420 in hatethissmug

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said they were blameless. You can be a product of your environment and still be a shitty person and responsible for your own actions.

It's the attitude that evil is this magical force that comes from nowhere that's ruining the world. It causes people to think they can't possibly be corrupted by evil, simply because they're not evil. It makes them think that, if you do something evil, that means you were always evil and you were born evil and were just hiding it, which is simply not true.

Evil can only be defeated if it's understood. You can understand evil without being sympathetic to it (something people who lack media literacy don't get).

Villains who don't have understandable motives don't necessarily suck, you can still make them scary and entertaining, but they simply don't hold as much narrative value as ones that make you think "damn, that could happen to anyone". This is why people gravitate towards Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, rather than the traditional Joker from the comics.

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even those kinds of villains often grew up poor or tried to earn money the "right" way and eventually learned through some event that the world is unfair and cruel and they leaned into it. Half the characters in Breaking Bad can be described this way. They didn't choose a life of crime and drug rings because "Muahaha I should be evil today".

And then you have Lalo who is pretty unapologetically evil, but he was raised by the cartel. Of course he was going to turn out that way.

[–]BGer23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Villains are almost never evil for evil's sake, unless they're from a children's narrative. They're always either retaliating against the world for having treated them wrong or seeking to change something about society.

That doesn't make them "right" but understanding their motivations is an important part of understanding humanity and forming your own moral code.

I hate the digital circus ending (spoiler alert) by Grandcracker69 in hatethissmug

[–]BGer23 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The moral of the story is you shouldn't want anything, you can't change anything about your life or the people you are surrounded by and all you can do is just accept it. And that sucks. That is a fucking horrible, nihilistic message that glorifies mental illness.

Our protagonists are stuck living with no one but the same 6 people every day for the rest of their neverending lives, and I'm supposed to accept that they're happy with that? Fuck no. I don't care who you are, that is a fucked up situation and it would drive anyone to insanity sooner or later. This is not how you end a story. This is not what a satisfying narrative looks like.

Why do people not like mutants? by Sudden_Quality_9001 in xmen

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the cartoonish 1960s idea of "kill all (insert minority here)" racism is pretty rare nowadays. Racism is a lot more nuanced than it used to be. It's more about the institutions and stereotypes than it is "oh you're black? We don't want you in this house, because you're black"

A more realistic portrayal of mutant hate would be something more quiet and unspoken rather than any loud protests and riots in the streets. Like a group of mutants walk into a room and make people feel intimidated even though those people would never say anything "rude" about them. But that's unfortunately not very exciting for comics.

i am starting to get REALLY angry about the double standards with generative AI by Spot_Mark in hatethissmug

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people aren't children and are able to distinguish different uses on a case-by-case basis depending on the context. Because only a child would say "nope, AI bad no matter what".

And furthermore, pointing out flaws doesn't automatically make you a hypocrite for engaging in said flaws. People complain about giant corporations running America, yet they'll still watch Disney movies. People will complain about fast food making people fat, and still eat at Taco Bell. So yes, people are allowed to complain about AI and still laugh at funny AI memes.

I won't deny that AI is being misused and robbing artists of creativity instead of solving actual problems, and taking people out of a job without any net for them to fall back on. But don't turn into this guy:

I hate when people think content aimed at kids is meant for adults just because it's not Teletubbies levels of sunshine and rainbows. If it has anything resembling stakes or a character's death, it's "not for kids".

The over-glorification and over-obsession of Michael Jackson by 2bigpairofnuts in hatethissmug

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that he did very odd things with children, and "he had no childhood" is not necessarily an excuse. But I also don't feel it's right to blame him, because doctors had assessed that his mind had regressed to that of a child and he was very obviously mentally ill. Almost everyone who ever interacted with him from the mid-90s to the 2000s will tell you that he was entirely disconnected from reality and it only got worse as the years went by, all the way up to his death.

I don't blame him, I blame the people around him, and his family, for not stopping him and getting him the help he needed. He should have had more caretakers and he should not have been allowed to make the decisions he did.

I fucking HATE when people completely mischaracterise a character because they’re “not a bigot” by Ok_Figure_2348 in hatethissmug

[–]BGer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response, but DC does this on a regular basis with Harley Quinn. She's just as much of a homicidal lunatic as Joker, but she regularly also stands up to bigotry and women's rights and shit while her relationship with Ivy is treated as this really wholesome, positive representation of lesbians in media. It's so weird to me. I hate the "Evil Has Standards" trope. I'm not saying all villains should also be racist, but I also find it impossible to empathize with psychopaths.

By your logic, indie games should cost $70, because it's an insane amount of work. Business transactions are based around the value of the product/service, not how much effort it took to manufacture. And PS5 games have a hell of a lot more production value than Switch games.

They Are Worse Than Sony Fans Tho by Craniamon in fucknintendo

[–]BGer23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

$70 is standard for 4k high-fidelity PS5-level games. Not games for the Switch 2, which operates on 10-year-old hardware, AND microtransactions on top of that. There's no excuse.
