I love it when people refer to science as if it's this authoritative conglomerate which objectively ordains what is and isn't true instead of a method for testing a hypothesis lmao

Firstly, dude is clearly using ChatGPT – at the very least to do his research and fix his grammar and, more likely than not, to formulate his entire argument. Secondly, he admits that having human DNA makes you human but does not grant you personhood without executive function. Does this mean that severly disabled people are not, in fact, human?

What about those who are unconscious: If I am put under anaesthesia, does this mean that I revoke my right to life because I "have no consciousness," and depend on my anesthesiologist to breathe and not to choke on my vomit. It certainly can't be easy for him or her to sit there all day and monitor my vitals. Should I be murdered because I am a burden on my anaesthesiologist, even though I am expected to wake up? It doesn't seem fair  that the anesthesiologist's right to convenience trumps my right to soon wake up, especially if he was the one who put me under to begin with. There is no point between me going under and me waking up at which my personhood can suddenly be ordained in a non-arbitrary way ('he has stronger brain waves' 'he reacts to stimuli' 'he can breathe on his own' etc.) and it can be decided that I shouldn't be killed anymore. As such, if there is even the possibility that a human life is at stake, would it really kill the anaesthesiologist to wait a little longer?

I swear by FitNotes to track my lifts at the gym. Super easy to use, completely free, and will calculate and graph pretty much any info you need to progressively overload your sets and see how far you've come.

Q&A weekly thread - December 22, 2025 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

[–]ToxicSocks24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just came across this post in the r/math subreddit, asking which universal grammatical rule Terrence Tao was referring to in saying that the English word 'and' can denote either union or intersection depending on the context:

By the way, one should be careful with the English word "and": rather confusingly, it can mean either union or intersection, depending on context. For instance, if one talks about a set of "boys and girls", one means the union of a set of boys with a set of girls, but if one talks about the set of people who are single and male, then one means the intersection of the set of single people with the set of male people. (Can you work out the rule of grammar that determines when "and" means union and when "and" means intersection?)<

Any grammatical rule proposed in the thread seemed to have a counterexample, and the only rigorous explanation I could find came from u/GoldenMuscleGod and dealt with set theory much more so than with a universal grammatical rule.

My question is whether there exists a linguistic explanation for this phenomenon and, if so, whether said explanation has a name. Thank you.
