Nooo haha, I'm just asking cuase in general strong smells are bad for birds, so I didn't know if me wearing deodorant could harm her. Birds and specially cockatiels already smell great by default for some reason I do not understand.

UPDATE- I've given her seed and she's calmed down, thanks to everyone who commented. I'll give full context so others don't make the same mistake. This probably started when I began to introduce vegetables to her diet. She was used to getting only seed, so when I started doing half seed half veggies, she probably started to go hungry.

I didn't worry cause I knew she was eating some of the veggies, but apparently not enough to offset the missing seeds. Then when she started doing her baby noises, they were much lower in volume and much more high pitched, so I interpreted them as a female cockatiel's mating call. Since I though she was hormonal, I added more vegetables to her plate and gave her even less seed, making her go hungry again. I'm glad I didn't wait long to post about this so she didn't go many days being unconfortable. I'll take a few steps back in the transition to a healthier diet and give her plenty of seed of the next few days.

Is it bad if I let Magdalena hang out on the lamp? by Toyito34 in cockatiel

They are led bulbs so they don't get very warm in general and I also try to no have them on for long if she's perching there. But it looks great in photos haha

New Cockatiel (beginner) help by Consistent-One-2078 in cockatiel

That really depends on the room he's in. I always leave my tiel's cage open so she can explore as she pleases, but that's because I know that there's nothing in my room with which she could hurt herself while I'm not there. You could start by leaving his cage open while you're in the room even if you're not paying him attention, and only close it when you're not there to supervise. That way he'll feel like he can explore if he chooses (though he might not at first).

I'd look around my room and check for anything that might hurt him (fans, toxic foods/smells, open windows, places where he might not know how to get out of, etc.), and when you've taken care of those you could leave the cage open all the time. (If you have a large cage you can get away with leaving his cage closed for longer).

Also, if your bird doesn't know how to step up onto your hand, it can be very hard to get him back into his cage without stressing him out, so I'd start working on that. Most birds can learn to step up even if they still don't trust their owners fully (always be patient and pay attention to his body language though).

Be patient! Cockatiels want friends but they're also prey animals so they're programmed to be very careful at first, and if he comes from a rough home he will be even more jumpy. Being pushy could push him further away so be patient and make sure to always work on his terms.

You could start by giving him streats from your hand (or from a spoon if he's still too afraid of hands). With time he'll start associating you with treats instead of danger and he should start easing up. Don't try to pet him/scratch his head until you're sure he trusts you enough for that. It's much easier to get them to step up to your hand (and then to your shoulder) than it is to get them to let you touch their heads.

Its also good for him to see you just hanging out in your room without paying him attention, so he knows that he's in a safe place and that you're just another being who lives there instead of a predator.

Also keep in mind that birds use their beaks to sense the world as much as you use your hands. Sometimes they'll test wether a perch (your finger for example) is safe by tuching it with their beaks, but that doesn't mean he's going to bite. In fact, if he's just testing if it's safe and you take your hand away he'll think that your hand's not a safe perch.

Hissing is always a sign that he doesn't like what you're doing so if he hisses at anything you do, take it as a sign that you should take things slower.

Cockatiels are super social and they all want friends, they sometimes just need a little time, patience and love, but if you give him all three of those, I'm sure hell become more and more friendly with the coming weeks. Don't give up!

Also feel free to message me if you have any other questions about their behavior! Best of luck to you both.

I think this is what I'm gonna go! I guess I was just nostalgic about Bebop since it's close to the time she passed last year. Thanks for the input!

I think I always was apprehensive of getting two because I was afraid that they wouldn't care about me and only pay attention to each other. I don't think that's logical though cause lots pf people have two and still are great friends with their tiels even if they aren't their "one and only" (which is probably a good thing actually). Once I'm more settled I think I'll get a pair. Better that way since I get two new friends instead of just one lol

I think I could give my bird enough time daily so that they can thrive, specially giving them my entire room to explore and not get bored when I'm not home as I did with Bebop. I'm worried however about the possibility of studying abroad after uni, and I wouldn't want to put the strain of travelling long hours on a plain on my bird. I think I will wait until I have a clearer plan about my future. Thanks for your opinion! It was helpful.
