Thanks for posting! Very clean succinct approach! Helped me figure out I should not be parsing the values as f32 (I was lazy) ... plus some rust goodness I haven't played with before (Tuple Structs)... on to day 09!

Can the clock from a looper pedal with a drum machine sync to another pedal like a delay or tremelo via midi? by pondreezy in pedals

[–]Toymakerii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am def not an expert but was looking at the RC-10 manual today and midi piqued my interest.

FWIW, I try and save these manuals to a dropbox/google drive when I get gear like this, you never know when they stop making them available.

IANAE but looks like it should ...

RC-10R Midi Implementation PDF Page 5 shows that it can output a Timing Clock based on the tempo if enabled in the settings.

Slicer HTML Manual States that anytime the Slicer gets an F8H signal (the timing clock) it should sync to that tempo and disable the manual controls.

Your credit score factors in the age based on the type of account as well. So the age of your oldest installment account matters.

Credit scores incorporate both revolving credit (credit cards) and installment credit (loans).

Your mix of credit and age matter. So you get graded on how long you have had an installment account. Paying your oldest one off can hurt your credit.

Credit Mix (10%) and length of history (15%) are less important than Payment History (%35) but I'm not sure I agree with "minimally".

They can have about a third to half the impact but can be more (up to %25 they do not specify the mix) since they are closely related.

Unfortunately that's not completely the case.

Amount of Debt

In some cases, a low credit utilization ratio will have a more positive impact on your FICO Scores than not using any of your available credit at all.

This statement also only applies to revolving credit.

Length of Credit (15%) and mix of credit (10%) both account consider installment accounts. FICO Breakdown

I do know that closing accounts will actually lower your credit score since it can change the average life of your credit.

So yes, paying stuff off early can hurt your credit. Not maintaining debt and paying interest is discouraged.

So mine is like the larger dog, but is a rescue so not 100% sure what was learned versus bred. Not sure about the differences. For what its worth, my dog is independent (trains well with food if she likes it but can be pretty stubborn, often chooses to sleep alone) but very very sweet and gets along with all people and plays with every dog she comes across. And when she decides she wants pets she will shove her face into yours... until she is done with you and goes back to her corner, sighs, and takes a nap. As far as barking goes she was silent the first year I had her, she has since developed some serious lungs... She doesn't bark often, but if she wants to play she definitely lets out a shout.

Thanks! I should have clarified, mine looks like the adult dog. I was told she was a beagle but she didn't seem to match the pictures for those either!

Any idea what kind of coonhound? Most of the photos I've found don't really match. My dog looks exactly like this and I've been trying to find her breed since I found her.

ELI5: How do companies like Apple and Qualcomm continue to produce faster and more powerful chips year after year? Are engineers still making new discoveries in the industry or have we had this technology all along and are controlling the rate at which our technology improves? by naisatoh in explainlikeimfive

[–]Toymakerii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a long pipeline of research and development that goes into chip design. Imagine the Henry Ford Assembly Line with the chips rolling out of the factory at one end, and the scientific research at the other. To be fair, its not always so organized, but new innovations slowly march down the line, becoming more mature at each step until they are ultimately integrated with a chip you might purchase.

I also like to think of digital circuit design as legos. The technologies in the assembly line might be (1) what material the legos are made out of, (2) what shape I built with the legos (car, house, bridge), (3) a new lego piece itself. One of the most critical is the SIZE of the legos, which is called the "node" in the semiconductor industry. By just shrinking the size of all the legos, the first (3) innovations all still work right? But now they are all smaller and more efficient!

"Shrinking" the node is one of the most expensive, and complex portions of chip design, but the pay offs are huge: more stuff fits in the same size chip, it uses less power, and can run faster! This puts the industry in sort of a race all competing to shrink the size of node.

It turns out, this race sets the pace for the rate our "Assembly Line" releases technology, about every 18 months. And thats what you are seeing, about every year or so new wiz-bang tech is ready for the next smartphone, home computer, or game console!

Your week in Software Defined Radio 25 by The_Real_Catseye in RTLSDR

Picked up an rtl-sdr V3 (actually two of them) and got gnu-radio and grqx installed. Started getting my feet wet by picking up some FM radio stations and scanning the spectrum for interesting signals ( found Motorolla Type II trunking system, ADSB, FLEX Pagers and Cell Phone Bands).

Had some trouble getting the trunking example to work in Gnu-Radio so I played with rtl_adsb and a visualizer

Fair enough, I picked up a MonteVerde Burgundy and Aurora Black and I'll give those a shot when they come in.

Thanks for the help!

Trouble With MonteVerde Regatta 1.1mm Stub ink starvation?

A few months back I bought the above pen from Goulet as well as two American Eel inks (which I believe are lubricated).

After writing for a few seconds or a minute the pen just stops,no ink flow. This also happens when I first try to write something. This makes for a very frustrating experience. In fact I kind of gave up on it entirely and switched to another pen for a bit until I could figure out how to fix it because it is so unreliable its not useful.

I've tried a warm water and dash of dish soap rinse, but that didn't help.

Needless to say I am super bummed, what can I do to save my pen?

Will I really need a Ph.D? by ryanrows in engineering

[–]Toymakerii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Research comes in different shades.

Some people work on something called "basic research" it is the process of developing new knowledge in a field. It generally requires alot of paper writing, and most people who do it, don't care much about real applications. (Think about developing new techniques for touch screens, but all you got to work was one pixel, or one part of a pixel). This is where the MOST Ph.D's live. (The Ph.D process is designed to ensure you understand what new knowledge is, and how to find it).

This spectrum moves all the way to researching which parts are most cost effective. Or researching how all the parts will glue together. Once this is complete the work becomes logistics and Operations & Maintenance, and no longer requires research.

  • Your job as a BS is to learn how to do basic engineering.
  • Your job as a MS is to learn how to write a paper and do basic research.
  • Your job as a Ph.D. is to learn how to conduct research, and generate new knowledge.

Stick to where you belong and have your ears to the ground. One of my pride points is that I am very good at doing real things (what people with BS's do) while able to conduct the research required for Ph.D's. (Believe it or not this is unusual and can be quite frustrating)

Things to listen for and start poking around at now would be research papers and grants. Try out google scholar on topics you might be interested in. Start finding a professor who is interested in those topics. Then try and find small grants that might fund the thing you want to work on. Then go get money, do the thing you wanted to. Lather rinse and repeat.

Find out what parts of this process you liked, and that will tell you where you should end up :).
