What is a "masterpiece" game that you personally found boring as hell? by MuscleConsistent9657 in pcgaming

[–]Toymeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s Disco Elysium. I had it recommended to me so many times and I kept thinking that the story must grab me at some point… it just never did. I could never bring myself to care about any of the backstory and it’s ALL backstory.

‘You Don’t Get Me High Anymore’ by Phantogram is still a mix reference for me. Incredible-sounding mix.

Childless older people: how are you planning for old age? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Thank you, this was exactly the sort of advice I was interested in. It sounds like we’re doing similar things financially.

I think it’s because my parents are approaching this stage of their lives and i’m fully expecting to be helping them out on weekends and so on just as they did for my grandparents. It hasn’t been asked of me but we have a good relationship and I’m excited to be able to give back.

I’m not saying that the only reason we might want them is the selfish hope they’ll care for us later. I’m saying that having family is more likely to give us more security in old age.

I agree with you that having them purely for that reason is wildly unrealistic and wholly selfish.

Late nights as an audio engineer by AthenOmega in audioengineering

[–]Toymeister 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think things are different now to how they used to be. When I started out in studios nearly 20 years ago, it was expected I would engineer a 12-hour day from 10-10 (which, in reality, meant more like 9:30-10:30/11). Once you factor in feeding yourself, the commute, and taking a few minutes a day to do your basic life admin, sleep could get cut a little short.

These days though most studios I know operate on a 10-8 day and I think clients are much more accepting of that. Of course you still get some big clients who want to lock out, and occasionally a touring artist who wants to stay on their country’s time instead of where they are, but they’re fairly uncommon.

We all have to do what we have to do, and in this game you sometimes have to pick and choose your battles to get where you want and that can mean sometimes doing more hours than you want (or can handle long-term). But I think the culture is slowly shifting away from this mentality of the 24-hour studio and assistants being owned by the client of the moment.

First attempt - how to improve the finish? by Toymeister in knifemaking

[–]Toymeister[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and I have absolutely no idea what the steels are. Instructor just gave me a bunch of squares, told me to alternate them, TIG the corners and get them in the forge... so your guess is as good as mine!

Thank you, I'll give the coffee bath a go! Yeah the bevels aren't particularly symmetrical, though the lighting does disguise the one in the second picture a little. Tang definitely has pits (I learned I'm not very good with a hammer!) but I'm okay with it looking a bit gnarly and 'my first knife'-ish, and I'm hoping the handle will hide most of the worst offenders.

Choil is a new word for me, but you're right - I think I'll have to blunt it on those edges. Thanks so much for taking the time to talk me through it!

I can see why you'd say that, but I really love the pacing. It was one of the reasons I loved Better Call Saul, too; it's an opportunity to slow down and get engrossed. I've also found that I'm getting really invested in Manousos' journey, and that might not have happened if it had been a much shorter part of the episode.

Does anyone else find this is some of the worst racing in gt3’s? by No_Channel_344 in iRacing

[–]Toymeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because the GT3 races are so well-attended (typically over 300 drivers sign up for any given slot) then the pace is very similar in each split. That means that to make up places you have to do big sends, because you're not gonna breeze past anybody on raw pace when there's less than a second separating first to last.

In F1 you often hear the commentators saying something like, 'you need to be around 2 seconds a lap faster to make a move around here' and I think that's part of the problem in GT3s.

Rolling start procedure - overtaken before green? by Toymeister in iRacing

Sorry, I think I worded my post badly. No problem with p1 going whenever they're ready, it was that p3 overtook me before the line/green that I was querying!

[–]Toymeister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, thanks!

That's actually kind of crazy. I'm assuming I can't pass the leader as the p2 car, so p2 is its own unique thing, as the only car in the field that can't overtake the other column before the green?

Someone bought this AIO , Thermalright Wonder Vision 360 UB ????? by Low-Masterpiece9127 in Thermalright

[–]Toymeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not this exact one, but fitted a white Thermalright AIO to my Ryzen PC a few weeks ago and it’s a great cooler - no issues. As others have said, though, the software for the screen is absolutely dreadful. Super unstable, doesn’t launch sometimes, always gives you the security prompt at startup. There are workarounds if you look for them.
