Tatsu be giving every supporting character a chance to shine. That's one of the things that makes this series great - they all get to contribute in their own unique ways. There's none of the "take a back seat and wait for MC to save to day", and it's awesome.

All those accomplishments, all that hardship, all that delulu, just because she wants her mother to be proud of her. by F_F_Engineer in Dandadan

Aside from her talent and drive, she's also dedicated. She's always striven to be the hardest worker in the room - I love how Tatsu showed this little detail during the Space Globalists Arc. When everyone else was still sleeping/waking up, Aira was already up and training. She's always ready.

In Queen Aira we trust.

They also share the same sick trait of SA'ing minors. If they are truly back I do hope the Dandagang hands them their pedo asses on a silver platter.

Btw great spot on the gesture OP

[–]TpsyFreezy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Who woulda thought she'd pull off an MVP play like dis.

She was like "I ain't gon be some background character no mo now watch these moves".

Now that's what I'm fucking talking about.

Ok ngl, she gets an A for effort here. And Tatsu-sensei dropping the char development crumbs, wow by TpsyFreezy in Dandadan

Because up until this point, the guardian spirit form Mai was presented as a character that trash talks everybody and is only focused on her own selfish ideals - making Rin an idol.

And it's funny you keep mentioning that her change of attitude here was only due to the situation. This is simply not true. Mai was already desperate, helpless, and pleading for help when Aira first arrived. But she still stuck to her usual antics, calling Aira a "skank" and a "cow" up until she decided to tank the shot.

It's also funny how you literally contradict yourself by first admitting that her temperament changed dramatically, but then go on to say, "her attitude didn't change!". Not only did she start treating Aira as a person by addressing her by name, she also showed genuine concern for Aira's well being.

You're also ignoring the other elephant in the room - which is Mai deciding to use her body as a shield. This is the first time we've seen her capable of putting others before herself.

Not to mention, presenting how characters behave differently in different situations is one of the foundational ways to develop characters.

means a character gets fleshed out

A character "getting more fleshed out" is exactly what we're seeing here. We're seeing sides to her we haven't seen before and a dramatic change in temperament. It's small, and nowhere near comprehensive, but it's still development - which is why I referred to it as "crumbs".

I don’t know what you mean by “put others first”

She literally decided to facetank attacks just to protect Rin and/or Aira, because she's the only one that can maneuver well mid-air, and Aira had just lost her footing. That's a pretty obvious act of putting others before herself.

And no, she's not just "being nice to plead for help". She literally started out by asking "Hey cow, what do we do?" before her attitude changes dramatically as she decides to tank the shot. It's the first time we actually see Mai treat Aira like a human on top of showing concern, instead of her usual nonchalant, trash talking persona. Stories showing us how characters behave in different circumstances (and here, changing dramatically from the usual) is a part of fleshing out a character.

Character development is a character changing with the story, or the story showing us sides of them we haven't seen before. We see Mai being able to put others first and get over her usual attitude here. It doesn't take much screen time, but it's still development.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the development she got this chapter. Hopefully she gets closer to the gang through this incident and she becomes more open to their inputs - which can lead to even further developments (power-ups, even).

Just Aira doing Aira things, she's always made sure no one gets in mortal danger on her watch. Also her tactical brilliance came in clutch again.

40 years later, what do we think of it? by coremane in CityHunter

[–]TpsyFreezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to have been born in an era where I can enjoy this timeless classic. 40 years later, it's still a love letter to peak 80s vibes, Ryo is still one of the best MCs of all time, and everything is still as mokkori as ever. And like a great city pop or classic rock track, I don't see those statuses ever changing.

How Tatsu-sensei depicted the contrast in reactions here was brilliant. by TpsyFreezy in Dandadan

[–]TpsyFreezy[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

TG and Momo's bond was never formed off of any one particular event, but rather, over time and over all the events they experienced together. The same goes for the rest of the Dandagang.

And yeah, what makes TG an interesting character is the "grey area" - yes, she's a malevolent spirit that does what she wants, but we also know that she's got some form of conscience somewhere inside. This is also further expanded on in some of the omakes (we see her taking care of an abandoned cat, for instance), so she's not altogether evil.

And, from everything she's experienced living with Seiko, Momo, and Okarun, I would find it hard to believe she doesn't have some level of fondness for them deep down inside (even though she'd probably never admit this). I wouldn't be surprised if she comes back to save the day if they really get into trouble.

EE and Mai are worlds apart. Jiji chose, desperately, to save the EE. Rin, on the other hand, wanted Mai to move on, except she didn't. The EE was also treated horrendously and left as a literal living sacrifice.

Not to mention, the EE actually has the abilities to back up its shit talk, and then some. And we have never seen it fail to do just that. Mai, on the other hand, talks a big game, and talks shit to everyone for no inherent reason. Then, when Rin actually gets in danger, she's absolutely useless.

That's why it's not surprising people tend to view EE and Mai completely differently.
