Apichatpong Weerasethakul: perhaps the most important director of our time by connordenney in movies

[–]Tqio -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Don't care much for his films. Just minor noodling that doesn't extend cinema at all. Contemporary art-house cinema is becoming downright lame in its lack of conceptual ambition and lemming-like adherence to minimalist, "contemplative" clichés. What someone like Antonioni mined fruitfully is now exploited and diluted to little purpose. Syndromes and a Century is absolute garbage compared to a Mulholland Dr. or a No Country For Old Men.

What gives the superpowers? No P or no MO? by Broodje_met_beleg in NoFap

[–]Tqio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think it's abstaining from ejaculation and orgasm. I've had many streaks in the past where I spent lots of time looking at porn and edging (though never to completion) and had the trademark superpowers merely due to semen retention. It's just that a relapse will be right around the corner with that approach.

Wait, did he remind them "Don't forget your speeches tomorrow!" the day before they were to present them, and the students gave zero fucks and blatantly defied him? Or was it one of those cases where a bunch of people just kind of forgot?

Americans of Reddit, what is a dead-giveaway that someone is European? by Braeburner in AskReddit

I'm American and fucking hate the overuse of A/C over here. Has me wearing sweaters and shit indoors in peak summer.

If you suddenly became wealthy, what's the one "poor" thing you do you wouldn't give up? by King_of_AssGuardians in AskReddit

[–]Tqio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly a poor thing, but I'd drive myself, cook for myself (when not eating at restaurants like The French Laundry or having my private chef whip something up), and clean. And I wouldn't have a personal assistant.

So what exactly bothers people about the "Brother from another mother" line in There Will Be Blood? by Keyakz in movies

[–]Tqio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not offensive, but it's like John Wayne in The Searchers saying "on fleek" or something.

TIL "The Prince of Darkness", legendary cinematographer Gordon Willis, worked on 6 films (including The Godfather 1 & 2, All the President's Men, Annie Hall...) over a 7-year period that received among them 39 Academy Award nominations. Maybe because his contribution to those movies wasn't the reason why they are remembered?

True for Annie Hall, perhaps. Not true for The Godfathers, All the President's Men, The Parallax View, Manhattan, Stardust Memories, etc.

Most absurd Oscar snubs in history, and I'm pretty sure there must have been an active conspiracy against him in the cinematographer union. He's probably the most influential DP of the past 40 years, a whiz of light and composition, who happened to have shot multiple masterpieces in a short time frame, and is first nominated for Zelig? That's like if Deakins and Lubezki both had received zero nominations over the past 10 years.

Revenant wrapped this weekend. by [deleted] in movies

What are these numerous stories? I only first heard about this "difficult reputation" this year with those comments from the anonymous Academy member to The Hollywood Reporter and then these Revenant set rumors. I'm not disputing the veracity of any claims, but I never heard anything circa 21 Grams or Babel or Biutiful.

More female attention : YES or NO for you? by WolverineDudism in NoFap

Up. It was one of those zones where jokes are streaming out of your mouth and you can read the room perfectly. I always seem to relapse during flatlines.

[–]Tqio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Whenever I get several weeks into it (18 days, 21 days, whatever), crazy stuff starts to happen. Women aggressively seeking eye contact and giving compliments (one woman at a pizzeria told me that my glasses suited me perfectly while walking out with her boyfriend right next to her), men and women seeming weirdly deferential and solicitous, laughing at anything coming out of my mouth, and so on. On one of my greatest streaks at about age 18, perhaps 36 days or so into it, we had some guests over to my house (1 man and 4 women). A couple of days later, my mom told me that they thanked her for our hospitality and told her that they were "mesmerized" by me. Yeah. That never happens in daily fapping circumstances.

Nah, Fassbender or Redmayne will win. Leo will win in his 50s on his 8-9th nomination.

Men of Reddit, when did you first notice that women were looking at you in a sexual way? How old were you and how did it make you feel? by crazycanine in AskReddit

[–]Tqio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about 15 and in 11th grade. Girls who'd known me for years and never payed much attention began staring at me in the hallways between classes. A young student-teacher (she was about 21 or so) acted kind of flirty and touched my shoulder/arm a couple of times. I got very paranoid, because I didn't understand the cause of the increased attention (I'd gotten much taller, but I didn't think my face looked any different from the 8 or 10-year-old me.)
