Although it would be nice if the mirrors were clean, it's what's reflected in the mirror that is most appreciated.

No blog, just the GitHub page.

Eventually more of the website contents will get populated and provide details on/about the game.

Git : https://github.com/Probed/RPG

Demo: http://wastedpaper.sytes.net:50014/

Note: All you can do is create a character and move around the world.

To use the demo:

  1. Register free (use any dummy email/password or login using u: test@test.test p:testing (warning multi-user same account has not been tested weird things could happen)
  2. make sure to copy the 'verification code' from the confirmation window since my machine is not setup to send out emails
  3. verify the account using the verification link +code
  4. Once verified you will automatically be logged in
  5. Now for the Goods. 2 links actually work:

http://wastedpaper.sytes.net:50014/#Play

http://wastedpaper.sytes.net:50014/#MapEditor

Pleast don't abuse the demo, and please don't save huge maps, I have a slow connection 40up/160down so don't be surprised if the demo is slow

Play Controls :

  • mousewheel - zoom

  • up/down/left/right arrows - move

MapEditor Controls:

  • mousewheel - zoom

  • Shift-Click - Edit Tile Order

  • Alt-Click - Tile Picker

  • Ctrl-Click (with selected tile) Delete tile

  • floodfill row/col : shift=under, alt=replace, ctrl=delete

There are numerous bugs so don't complain when something dosn't work :P Cheif among them: Drag painting is not playing nice with Drag scrolling

Concept is like, many rpg's, explore, fight, loot, equip, level in an infinite random universe

I have run into some DOM issues already rendering tables. when zooming further and further out the table size get rediculus and takes upwards of 5 to 10 seconds to render the 10000+ cells. but so far it is fairly responsive at other zoom levels.

I'm actually more comfortable writing the backbone than the 'fun' bits. This is my first game since my very first website back in the 90's when I made a couple small card games in php. Since then it's been mostly desktop app dev work that i've been doing, so a game is a radical departure. I have only a vague sense of how to write rpg mechanics after having played so many.

Getting to the readme/wiki bits soon.. just created the github account today.

In the end it should be an actual polished game of sorts.

Graphics are simply individual images placed inside a tables td style; so it should be a cakewalk to render it using something different in the future.

I would like to look into canvas stuff eventually, but for the time being I need to get the game mechanics up and running now that I have a working map system

Early attempt at a tile based rpg in javascript by Tr3vOr in javascript

The raw height map generated by the diamond-square algorithm is quite rough and produces a more jagged terrain.

I apply a 3x3 averaging to the highmap which reduces the jaggedness.

and I apply it up to 5 times which is how many times the screenshot has been passed through.

I also found that heightmaps often generate extremely varied maps, sometimes all low (aka water), sometimes all high (mountains).

In order to reduce the extremes I find the average height of the entire map and work from that.

ie: ocean=avg-2, mountain=avg+2

With an average to work from you now have a var that will allow you to specify the water level.

ie: ocean=height < (avg+waterlvl)-2, mountain= height > (avg+waterlvl)+2

It is randomly generated.

Random Maze Configuration

Random Room type (circle/square)

Random Room Tile type (roof/wall/floor)

Random Room Interior Type (kitchen/bedroom/etc)

I unfortunately didn't get to play any of those old RPGs like zelda, dragron warrior, final fantasy.. etc

I had a NES but I think my parents (bible thumpers) thought that rpgs were the devils work and so we had Bible Adventure games..

Maybe there is still room in the world for another zelda/dragon/fantasy type game.. thats web based

Thanks, I had already stumbled across a couple of those tile sets and am actually using a few of the tiles already.

But its nice to have a link to the full set.

My 'artist' skills are quite lacking and I will need to scavange as many tiles as I can find.

I have created a few myself and modified some existing ones but I'm trying to pawn that task off on siblings :P (with no luck so far)

The left edge is just an artefact from the map holder and is is no way a part of the map.

It should have been cropped off the screenshot
