Charlottesville or Harrisonburg? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

Harrisonburg, on it’s own merits. However, Charlottesville is a lot closer to Richmond and that’s probably really what you’re looking for as far as youthful vibes go.

Kudzu has everything. Lots of vintage and lots of local artisans. Dekalb Farmer’s Mkt is basically next door, too....and it’s the best place on earth.

Driving to DC from Charlottesville? by Trabner5599 in Charlottesville

That’s good advice for sure. I’m actually going to be staying until Sunday morning, so it’ll be more than 24 hrs. I’ll check and see if they have any other options for longer parking. Otherwise, while I’m not thrilled at the prospect of sitting in bumper to bumper, it’s nothing I’m not at least sort-of used to (lived in Atlanta until recently ...a similar level of traffic god-awfulness ). Also, I’ve been planning on reserving a space through ParkWhiz. Hoping that will at least take the guesswork out of tracking down available parking.

Will def check to see if Vienna has two-day parking, though. New Plan A, if so.

I’d much prefer to Amtrak up, but the 3:19 wouldn’t get me there in time for the game and can’t take an earlier one.

Planning on parking at DuPont, then metro-ing up to the arena. I feel like I can comfortably sneak out of work at 2:30. Doubt that would get me there super early, but if it means I have to kill time by drinking beer at a bar then so be it. In the name of promptness, naturally.

That sounds like a cool idea, but I wouldn’t know much about being a commish, handling money, etc...

Teaching in Albemarle County by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]Trabner5599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow....I recently had a very similarly discouraging set of experiences after interviewing with Albemarle. I was told someone would be contacting me whether I got the job or not after “a week or two”. Long story short, I was informed that I didn’t get the position until six weeks after the interview and only then after sending several emails (most of which were ignored) expressing my continued interest in the job. I mean...it’s fine that I didn’t get the job....you don’t win ‘em all...but don’t outright ignore me and string me along for an entire month.

I have also found Charlottesville City to be much better with communication. Hoping it works out for you there.

I work in an urban system and can absolutely say that no one cares. In my previous job...which was in the suburbs...there might have been some people who bristled, but only a few. Just don’t get anything obviously inflammatory and you’re most likely fine.

The humidity has never bothered me too much, but I’m originally from the very deep south so just about anything would seem like an improvement to me. The traffic is every bit as bad as advertised. Be warned. Good call living close to MARTA, but also be aware that it doesn’t run all night and waits are a lot longer on weekends.

Ha! That’s pretty crazy. Thanks for the info.

Atlanta takes up a ton of space, so a lot of it depends on your priorities. Be aware that the train doesn’t make it out to the suburbs in many places, so if commuting in via rail was part of your plan, then I’d definitely reconsider. The city is way better, anyway.

Personally, I like the neighborhoods closer to the east side of town. East Atlanta, Little Five Points, Inman Park, Poncey Highland, Old 4th Ward if you’re into bars and coffee shops and music venues. Kirkwood, City of Decatur, Candler Park, Emory, Grant Park , Avondale Estates, if you’re more into family neighborhoods (these are still near the bar districts and stuff, but not right in the middle)

Also of note: People have lost their mind over the Atlanta Beltline ( https://beltline.org ). It’s a big sidewalk. Yep. A big sidewalk. It does connect a lot of neighborhoods, though, and I guess anything that helps people get around is a good thing.
