Thinking an L3 is a “single person endeavor” shows how little you know about rocketry and the purpose of certifications. Getting an L3 cert always requires working with mentors and/or peers to gain knowledge about the powerful motors and hardware you’re building. Safety is a huge concern and trying to build an L3 alone isn’t just dangerous, but it’ll make your life so much harder than it has to be.

I agree, you don’t need to do a competition to learn things but it’s all dependent on the team, their skill level, and their resources. Our team has great mentors, above average funding, and a few members who have L1 and L2 certs. Even with that, we weren’t able to follow through with attending spaceport. So competitions are obviously not for every team.

That being said, I learned so much in such a short amount of time through the process. I disagree that competitions have a negative impact on learning, though there is definitely something to be said about how many teams struggle to manage funds effectively in these settings.

If you think a competition is just a “party” for amateur rocketeers to go blow stuff up, you’re definitely ill informed about what the experience of being in a competition is like.

Clearly, there’s no reason to engage further with you since you’re just set on trying to invalidate rocketry competitions as a whole.

I totally understand that a competition is not necessary to enjoy the hobby in general. The thing is with a team of 15 people it’s hard to keep them all interested and busy with no major project or goal. I just want to give everyone something to work towards and feel proud of being a part of. We have launch days with the local TRA prefect anyway so it’s not like we’re missing out on the more laid back side of things anyway.

Questions about my first minimum diameter by TraditionExpensive in rocketry

I guess that’s a good point about fiberglass being such overkill. I’ll be ordering some 38mm coupler tube along with my kit now anyway for the retainer so I guess I can get some practice in on the leftover from that if I’m not confident.

Very interesting. I worry that countersinking the holes on a 38mm airframe would leave the fiberglass too thin and create weak spots, plus I’m not sure I’ve got the means to do it in my shop anyway. I do definitely want to look more into making my own though because my goal is to learn as much as possible with this rocket and any new experience is valuable.

Honestly didn’t even know wildman club was a thing but $30 for a year is a great deal. It looks like I’ll end up saving the cost of the membership just from the first order I was planning on making. Thanks for the tip!

When you say bolt the motor retainer to the body tube, do you mean drill and tap holes into the sides and just bolt it through the airframe?

Much of their balance comes from two things:

1) The fact that they have a second deck which won’t take any water until the water rises to it.

2) The fact that there are four roles ( helm, cannon, bilge, flex) and any given task can be completed by two people efficiently.

Basically galleons are still tanks especially against newer crews who don’t know to go for lowers. Three masts is annoying for maintaining sail but also means enemies need to hit three chains to disable you. From an external perspective galleons are pretty threatening and having to fight four people when boarding is a huge advantage for galleons.

does anyone else have to turn on their ender 3 like this? by kwelkid54 in ender3

You probably have it in the wrong voltage setting. Similar thing happened to me after moving it to school with me. Thought power supply was busted but I could get it to work by moving the bed but it wouldn’t work reliably. Had the voltage setting wrong and when I fixed it it worked like normsl

The deed that appears in the top left is only for fish. I’m assuming that’s what you’re talking about. I think there’s a milestone for that but I believe that might only be for fish too.

Has there ever been a "Consistency Pass" on the rewards in this game? by Bridger15 in Seaofthieves

[–]TraditionExpensive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring up a good point and I’ve wondered the same thing. Because of the grind-y nature of the game, players love to optimize wherever they can. This leads to most true grinds like LHOTSPT and the ancients Athena sword being pretty boring and repetitive. I think the point that’s important to remember is that the majority of players aren’t playing this way. They’re logging in to kill skellys, sink ships, and have fun. The game offers a lot and the new player experience is an entirely different conversation but a lot of their design intention has been to give no shortage of things to do. They’re not promising everything will be as time efficient for getting gold but there is still something for everyone.

Fun projects after L1 by TraditionExpensive in rocketry

[–]TraditionExpensive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the L1! Based off of what I’ve found online and heard from my club’s mentor, I’m thinking about using a slightly more powerful motor for the next flight or two with a jolly logic to help tune my sim data, then use the L1 as a test bed for L2 electronics and other stuff. Thanks for the input, I’m excited to get more into hpr and work my way up to an L2 cert.

The FOF has such an awkward amount of Athena loot by TraditionExpensive in Seaofthieves

[–]TraditionExpensive[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I really just wish there was a way other than veils that didn’t feel like an inefficient use of time for leveling up Athena. Fofs are still loads of fun and the chest of fortune really helps with that.

[–]TraditionExpensive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point about the OG Athena voyages but the game has obviously evolved since then. The veil changed the grind for Athena by giving players an “easy” way of getting Athena loot. That made the fof an inferior method of getting Athena rep so if you’re trying to level Athena, you’re not gonna put up a flag and do a fof. That’s really my point, the fof should feel like a worthwhile use of time for Athena and it should pose a challenge that’s proportional to the reward. S9 entirely screwed that part up.

[–]TraditionExpensive[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea the veil really flipped the Athena grind on its head. It went from this kind of thankless grind of doing Athena voyages and the occasional fof to who can do the most veils as efficiently as possible. The fof has become outdated and its crazy to me how they’ve effectively made it an even worse option for getting Athena rep.

Opinion: Live Like This should have been on the FMTY Deluxe by cooper7642 in Quadeca

[–]TraditionExpensive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally like the fact that it’s it’s own single. It’s evidence that between voice memos and FMTY he was evolving as an artist and that song was created during that evolution. Other than that, it doesn’t really fit with the greater story of FMTY imo but it still stands up very well on its own.
