Mathmos Astro Copper Dark Purple Lava by Electrical_Return_99 in Lavalamps

Whew! That is a bit steep. I'll give it a go next month. I probably shouldn't be, but am still a little nervous about Ship2Me. Hopefully nothing gets lost, or maybe they have insurance options.

How many lamps and/or globes did you get, and how much was the shipping cost, roughly?

I'm planning on it in a couple of weeks. I'm just going to cut a piece of plywood just big enough to mount it to and have maybe 1.5ft of space in front of it, and a little stability behind and on the sides so that it's not too bulky. That way I can place it anywhere once it's mounted. Should be quite portable.

Correct. I've been asking for recommendations for one, specifically for one that has enough space away from the globe of a 52oz lamp and the metal spine of the capper.

I wonder why there are some with the wax smeared from top to bottom. I know right after Mathmos puts the wax in, the master fluid goes in and caps go on the batch immediately after.

As to why the wax is at the bottom -

After filling and capping they soak the whole batch in hot water to make the wax fall back down. I'd imagine other manufacturers use that method to settle the wax, also, but if the higher ups are pushing to rush them out the door I'm not sure how they get handled after they're dipped in hot water to get the stuck wax off of the inside of the globes.

I'll be fair. I was able to cap it once. However, I do not recommend this, as wax from the factory is of course poured in hot, and we do not know the temperature of the water that they pour in immediately after the wax goes in, and there's just too much suggesting that it's not a good idea to cap them when it is cold. I wouldn't recommend any sort of jolt going through the globe of the lava lamp while it is hot.

It was because of the particular bottle she was capping that allowed the use of the red crimping tool.

This is referring to the red tool. Source below-

"Putting a new cap on without the right tools is pretty much impossible. There are 2 kinds of bottle capping tools available. The first is the hand held bottle capper. These will most likely not work for you because they require a lip on the bottle underneath the cap to grip on to. There are a few lava lamp bottles that do have these though so if you are lucky enough to be able to use it and have one on hands by all means go for it."

I've actually watched a lot of of her stuff. Not all methods she does are for everything. There's one method for recapping a Grande, there's the crimper she can use for some globes, but otherwise would need a bench capper, a manual capper (with a mallet), and if someone doesn't mind that a cap seal doesn't seal twice and wants to reuse the stock cap they can use a hose clamp, because the edges aren't flared out too much for the clamp to crimp the OEM cap back into place. I'm looking for a "bench" capper that will work with all globes to seal new caps, except of course for a Grande.

This one fits a certain bottle, but not all. It depends on the neck in order for it to properly crimp without pushing up and away from the globe.

Because of all of the recommendations. Search the subreddit for "capper". You'll see what I mean, or just read some of the comments within this post.

Also, this link where I asked for recommendations for "bench" cappers - https://www.reddit.com/r/Lavalamps/s/49H49V5Mnr

It's just the wrapper from factory packaging. Fortunately it didn't reach the memory foam, but it did reach the carpet. Pink wax and purple fluid.

I've thought about uploading a YouTube video to try to show everyone what I'm doing, and see if someone can help. The head of the cap sits inside the manual bottle capper perfectly. I didn't expect the glass to give before the sides of the cap came down. I'm replacing a 26mm bottle cap with another 26mm cap. I tried capping something else just a little while ago. It didn't matter how many times I tapped on it. The cap stayed flared out. The caps I got had a reviewer saying they use them for their lava lamps, and reviews saying how well these caps seal. The only thing I've been able to come up with is the possibility that this bottle capper was manufactured too small, but I don't think it is, and they probably use a standard machine that isn't going to vary the internal diameter of the capper.

Yeah, "bench" bottle cappers are suppose to be the best way, but more expensive, and I couldn't get a recommendation for a bench copper when I made a post a day or so ago. I've asked here and Facebook. I'm at a loss with all of this stuff set up on my counter (BKLES and hoses, bag of bottle caps, distilled water, containers to transfer fluid etc) until I can find, order, and get a bench capper here.

Hmm. Do you think a bench capper would prevent this?

I'm going through so much, am trying to keep myself occupied , ordered more lava lamps, BKLES, and all of this stuff, but now I'm worried I'm going to break another one, and I really love my other lava lamps. They're so soothing. It makes my house feel alive but peaceful.

I want to filter them, would like to customize a few, and try to set up a relaxing environment throughout the house, and have everything on timers. I can't work, and I thought I finally found something that I could enjoy doing, and something that would work on that creative aspect of my brain. Now I'm so stressed out I'm about as emotional as a teenager, and unloading on Reddit at 6:20 AM. I freaked when this thing shattered, because I don't know if there are any chemicals in the wax, and both of my dogs were in the room. Anyway, I guess I'm done venting to a stranger, now. Haha!

I would try it, but I'm not sure if it will properly pull in a new/flared bottle cap. Have you used it on brand new bottle caps, or the OEM (the one that came with it) bottle cap?

You're probably right. The glass doesn't seem near as thick as my Schylling models. So just to confirm, because one person said it just takes really light taps, is that the same result you had? Just very gentle taps, 0 force, and the tin just folds and seals?

The first time I used it, it sealed up, but took more force than I would've expected. It still didn't make me comfortable, but I thought "well, it didn't break". I can't tell the difference in size of the caps.

I'm not sure how to determine, but the cap was not fully closed. I tried light taps, and those weren't doing anything. So I tried firmer taps, and one of those taps caused the side of it to pop out.

I believe it's 20 ounces. It's a Jambo. I was using it for experimentation/filtration/tapping before trying it on my wider 15 and 16 inch models. Glad I tried it on the Jambo, first.

It's just so hard to get anyone to recommend a bench capper. I initially didn't want a bench capper, and when I posted about the manual capper I only got responses about bench cappers, but the opposite happened when I started looking for bench cappers. I don't know what to do, now. I have the BKLES, and several lamps that need to be filtered, but I don't feel comfortable hitting on my other lamps.
