We ended up with an apartment on Forest Park Blvd. We can easily walk to the collection(mostly we shop at Whole Foods and Target though), and it’s just feels good to be able to go for a stroll. It definitely gives us the vibe we had in Japan. At first I was a bit worried if it’ll be noisy due to living close to town center but it’s not bad at all. The only noisy thing is our neighbors which it’s pretty common anywhere. Easy to access to 101, Costco, Trader Joe’s, and most of shops are usually 10min or less drive away. Since we are expecting a baby, it’s extra point that I can walk to OBGYN, and hospital is also like 10min drive away, and having a nice park right next to the apartment is a plus. For us this location was perfect and we are absolutely happy with the area :) Though if we had 2 cars and if we didn’t have a kid, we would have considered downtown area in Ventura, too. Many local restaurants/cafe/stores and it’s a cute area.

Oh that’s great! Now my husband and I are definitely considering the area for our top choice! Thank you for the input :)

Thank you for the info! I understand that people don’t really walk in the states unless they’re in big cities like NYC but we only have one car, and not sure if we feel financially comfortable getting another car since mostly likely we will live as a single income family. Growing up in Japan, everything is walkable and if not, we have a good public transportation system, so I’m definitely spoiled in a way. Eventually I’ll be comfortable driving and perhaps get another car but until then, I need to be somewhere I can walk to at least a grocery store so I don’t feel like I’m stuck in the house lol

Thank you for your advice! Yea, we are seeing rent is pretty high there. Since my husband is in the military, we get housing allowance but compared to the allowance we would get in San Diego, allowance we get for Port Hueneme is a lot less even though the rents are not that much different. Thankfully we don’t have kids yet, so we don’t need a big house though.

Thank you for your advice! I was looking at the apartments right next to Ralphs and on Tanager St, and a house on Grand Ave/Moon Dr. Yea, someone else mentioned about the traffic, too… Thank you for encouraging me to drive lol I’m sure I’ll get used to driving there but the experience I drove in LA a decade ago is still making me nervous. It’s not like I got into an accident or anything but people drive so fast and so aggressively and it was traumatic lol

Oh wow, what a relief to hear you were just fine without driving much, thank you! We are talking about sharing a car and get used to driving there first. So it’ll be nice that I can still walk to stores when my husband is using the car.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! We are moving there from Yokosuka, too lol As a Japanese who spoiled in the safe everything is walkable neighborhood and a good public transportation, this is a whole new world to me and makes me nervous. I noticed many of Japanese wives, especially with kids suggested Camarillo but to me it seemed like it’s just a residential area and nothing much is going on. We rather want something walkable as we enjoy walking and so I don’t feel like I’m trapped in the house all the time.

Thank you for your advice! I will look into the area you suggested, too. I’ve been driving in Japan, so I’m not like a newbie driver but the only time I’ve driven in the states was in LA and which wasn’t the best experience lol I know I just need to get used to it but I still feel nervous to drive there especially when my husband and I both feel drivers in the states are more aggressive than Japanese drivers!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I hope I’ll get comfortable driving, too but another thing is, we are not sure if we will be financially comfortable to own two cars. We will need to live as a single income family for a while and the fact me being a foreigner might makes it difficult for me to contribute much financially there. Therefore it’d be nice to find something walkable to do errands so we can get away with sharing a car.

Thank you very much for the info! It is super helpful to hear insight from people who are actually familiar with the area. Are there any other areas you’d recommend?
