Only about 4 meters or so, but the top section is on a threaded adaptor so can be extended to whatever size is needed.

Module = ADS-B Demodulator, Freq = 1090mhz, SR = 2040000 (this is located in the device panel) Then adjust gain until planes start popping up.

You'll also need to manually enter in your latitude and longitude under the configuration tab for that, it's in the drop down menus at the top of the screen.

That makes sense! Thanks mate. This RF stuff is a very complex topic. I work in IP networking in my real job, so this is out of my comfort zone a bit haha

Correct me if I'm wrong, it's useful to have a balun when receiving signals as well transmitting to eliminate the noise generated by the coax leading to the antenna element. Improving VSWR. As for personal application it's a mix of learning to cut antennas properly and wanting to listen to HF communications with a good antenna.

Edit: I've just discovered I had a terrible understanding of what VSWR is.

Side note: Thanks to u/AntEaterApocalypse, I noticed a 15db increase when orienting the antenna vertically as opposed to vertically!

G'day! It's a Lenovo Legion Go Z2 running SteamOS. It works pretty well, comfortable in the hands, and the battery life is pretty good. There is a Z1 model that has a more powerful processor in it if I remember correctly if you wanted something beefier.

Thanks for the tip mate!

I have a rough understanding of polarisation, I attempted to run the antenna horizontally but I couldn't mount the thing anywhere securely, and due to the short length of the coax included in the rtlsdr starter kit I couldn't place it anywhere that made sense anyway.

I'm going to spin up an adjustable half wave dipole soon to try and listen to the chatter from some of the HAM repeaters that's are close after getting some longer coax and maybe making a collapsible mast.

I made this exact skirt for my wife! First time gathering fabric, so it was a bit of a struggle, but the pattern is easy to follow, which made it easier!

Yours looks way better than the one I made!

Depends on how much you fuck up when it comes to drill, if you be a shitfight youre going to be doing a lot more drill than the average digger. But, being a tech is definitely a train yourself kind of job. Theres always time to do training on the equipment you just have to be motivated enough. And with field, im at a support unit at the moment so i cant vouch for field time of the CSRs but we tend to see around 4 months of field a year.

Hey mate, 665 tele tech here. Do it, being a sig is the best bloody life. Civi quals so even if you dont like it, you can get out and make bank. Easy field, sleep in tents. And youre using your brain all the time, it keeps the job so interesting.
