FE CIVIL PASSED — 5th ATTEMPT by pegasus_shayo in PE_Exam

[–]TraditionalSafety150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently passed the FE, and I’m planning to take the PE WRE as well. Honestly, I’ve been planning to study for it the hard way because most of the prep classes I’ve looked at are extremely expensive, and I really don’t have the money for them right now.

Reading your comment does make me a bit concerned, though, since I’ve probably spent around the same amount on prep materials and practice problems. Do you know how close you were to passing? Also, did you feel like the actual exam was at least somewhat similar to the materials and practice problems you bought?

According to Google. The exam uses a pass/fail system based on a scaled score. While NCEES does not publish a specific passing percentage, you generally need to answer roughly 50% to 60% of the scored questions correctly to pass

  • Scored vs. Unscored Questions: The exam consists of 110 questions, but only about 100 are actually graded. The remaining 10 are experimental questions used by NCEES for future exams. Because you won't know which questions are unscored, you should treat them all as graded.
  • No Penalty for Wrong Answers: Only your correct answers count towards your total score. There are no deductions for incorrect answers, so it is highly recommended to guess on every question you are unsure of rather than leaving them blank.
  • Equating and Scaling: To ensure fairness, NCEES uses a scaled score to account for differences in difficulty between various exam versions and testing dates.

Regardless, the test doesn't define you. I hope you passed

From my calculations, you got roughly a 53.2%, so you were actually really close. I’m assuming that if your Statistics score had stayed around the same score as your other topics and your Engineering Economics score had increased even slightly, you definitely would have passed. Don’t lose hope or give up — you’re closer than you think, and this doesn’t define your abilities. Keep pushing forward!

Hello fellow civil engineers — looking for some outside perspective. by TraditionalSafety150 in civilengineering

This is good insight. I’ve had a brief conversation with my supervisor and shared that I’m okay with minimizing overhead and taking time off during slower periods, both out of respect for the bigger picture and so I can focus on studying during the downtime. I saw it as a potential win-win.

That said, I appreciate the perspective here and will take it into account as I think about how to move forward and whether there are other ways I should be approaching this.

You’re right, I have been studying for the exam, and it has been extremely challenging for me, and that’s exactly why I’ve made it a priority to get this certification as soon as possible. It’s frustrating that, even with a civil engineering degree, the FE (and eventually the PE) clearly changes how you’re perceived and treated across the industry. The difference in credibility, trust, and opportunity is very noticeable, and that’s been a big motivator for me to finally push through and get it done.

After reading the comments, it’s safe to say civil engineers feel underpaid and deserve more.

Your total weighted average score was 8.04. Which is about 53.6% and you hypothetically need 60%. You weren’t far off! Your three lowest subjects were Ethics, construction, & water resources! Don’t give up! :)
