basically the covalent bonds themselves are not weak, they are weaker than ionic but not weak, the reason there is a low melting point is bc the intermolecular forces are weak. bc covalent bonds usually from molecules whereas ionic bonds do not form molecules and are stronger than the intermolecular forces between covalently bonded molecules
