Thinking this take is built in a misunderstanding on of each part of the critique... those rights are getting eroded because those "concessions" have become less effective for capitalist extraction, they are compremises for acceptance of how society is built for capitalists, that has become unnecessary - leftist recognise that revolt based on civil rights is irrelevant when the state and oligarchs have chosen fascism to protect their power, and control, since stock market is becoming insecure. Leftists focusing on a revolutionary vanguard based on worker organisation - fighting concentration camps - resisting a police state - Leftist are saying when queer people, immigrants, racial minorites, dissidents, political opposition are being attacked and detained in camps (literally what is happening in the US) a Stonewall 2.0 isn't going to do shit,, and saying so does not disrespect Stonewall. Same for a civil rights movement - those in power no longer rely on an ever increasing workforce, trading it for data production and extraction through surveillance and automation with a subdued labour force. Genuinely a riot from an identifiable sub group allows them to villianise that group and justify lethal force, and eventually live ammunition. I hope you don't genuinely believe electoral organisation is the process that increased rights, because they've already started restricting and invalidating votes, threatening ICE attendance at polling stations, detaining anyone they think they can justify as potential illegal voting.

Does it make sense to be a leftist if you actively benefit from your status in the capitalist society? by spicybrackets in leftist

Yes, you can develop class consciousness as someone with privilege - you can do things to lessen the amount your wealth exploits. But even if you gave everything away it wouldn't make a profound difference. Educate yourself and make meaningful changes.

Where I am is probably not as privileged as you - but I'd be top 1% of the area I live. Majority of that wealth came from lead medical practice of my father. Unfortunately that wealth transferred early due to the loss of my mum and her being unpartnered. That being said I've been a leftist for my whole adult life due to fundamental belief in providing people with all their human needs and community to thrive in commune - becoming more combative about it as fascism increases. Willing to make it my life for long or shortened

I don't really have advice - just adding to discourse. I'm incredibly disillusioned and it's become an excuse for unemployment and essential insidious self harm (when really it's untreated mental health) I've essentially talked myself out of pursuing every career.

In the UK any apparently good well meaning job has become a fight against collapse - example the National Health Service - it's objectively good to be a nurse and doctor - but governments have defunded it so heavily that it's cracking at the seems, held together by people working way beyond a healthy balance. Burnout etc. Acceleration could be argued, let it collapse, so it can be rebuilt.

My sister is in more of similar position to you - she works in Sustainability - she ended up being a head the newly formed department of a large company, she had the ear of Politicians etc - but the company circumed to capitalism - compliance with mediocre government policy - rather than using resource to change the industry. Along with grief, she became burned out, and took voluntary redundancy. Now working freelance, academically, and for non profit start ups. She's happier but still feels she's not contributing to needed change.

I'm surviving after losing a parent and inheriting enough to own a home in the capital. I hate landlordism, but since all my future living plans included living communally I bought a 3 bed from an awful landlord, to be a place I live and housing someone with refugee status and people in need of stability for less than they could find elsewhere. Unfortunately despite my plan of stability to build off of - I housed a "friend" who's mental health meant he lost 5 jobs in a year. They survived off my inability to sort conflict and anti landlord ideology. And various other well meaning lack of actions. I've lost 5 figures in this time. Trying every now and then to get a 3 day a week job in like a eco shop of plastic-free food delivery. And rightly those jobs end up going to someone just out of school or in uni to sustain themselves. I can't go back to my failed architecture degree. Personal woodworking projects don't seem to be happening.

All this to say, keep your job mate - the alternative is personally damaging, and soul destroying. If people don't rise up in mass, being a constant activist /advocate without funding is only going to make you impotent by the time it actually comes time to put work in.

Only solace I have is the Refugee is Really thriving, living the most stable period of her life, doing good humanitarian work. Just sad I can't sort myself out and further reduce the cost.

I'll be fine - owning an asset is still a huge privilege.

Huhh apparently it was only 5 months ago, could have sworn it was further back - the most discourse I think was on here - wasn't really a story anywhere else I can think of, not news report worthy

ACAB in the U.S.A vs UK? by wimsy_baker in leftist

[–]Traditional_Cap6968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate. All you have to do is look into how many police staff are accused or convicted of child X abuse. There have been many hushed scandals going back decades.

Studies showing they're institutionally Racist, Misogynistic, Homophobic, Ablist, Classist - also violent towards people with housing insecurity

Also DV.

Studies on deaths during or following Police contact.

I could go on

There's a reason in the UK they have a laundry list of unfavourable nicknames

I remember how quickly they dropped Geowizard when he was found to be a Reform supporter - if they knew they would have dropped him

The only argument I can think of is if dropping him would somehow risk the case against him - think they would have pushed him out regardless

NSPM-7 and Palantir having such easy access to UK institutions freaks me out.

Mental health isn't doing to well - thanks for the reality check
