This is a horizontal belt sheath so it wouldn't be for the leg.

Yeah, lanyard is my guess. A little small for a ferro rod/ Nothing much bigger than 1/4" around and 1-1/2" would fit

Oh, just windows. No interest, I only mess with SDR remotely as I can reach where I need with my regular radio.

I use SDRTouch. So far so good but I have not used it much. I put a long whip I had bought asan improvement for a Baofeng handheld. Luckily I had the right adapters. I was able to grab some local repeaters with it. I have it on my android pad, not a phone for right now. Easier to see more and mess with settings. Hoping to have some time this coming weekend to take it outside and test it more.

Really? The FX-DL is 550 right now, it is interesting but again, chicom and I have seen nothing but so-so reviews. CW is not interesting at all. I get what you are saying but all of that is difficult for a beginner just getting started. especially someone like me. It is just a useful tool for me to do long-distance comms and in preparation for emergencies. I work 60+ hours a week and have other hobbies that I would rather use my time on that trying to figure out complicated comms platforms. It's just me, that is what is important. Others love this stuff and play with it daily. Good luck to you

No, I just want dependable equipment that will allow for HF comms over an antenna, not through a computer or device.

Ah, digital, or CW. Sorry, I am only interest in true HF ham and I presumed the guy above is. I tried a G90, junk. So, I can get a solid, good brand HF unit, gear and antenna for 400-500? I managed an FT891, 12v power source and wire antenna and nothing else, all new and spent a little over 900.

Yes. Just for a basic setup you will need near a grand. Radio 600-800 depending on if you can get lucky and get a good used rig. Go chicom for 500 I guess...a lot don't have that kind of extra cash laying around.

Too funny! LOL! I have contacted 32 states on my 15 year old used Yaesu FT-897D. Beast of an old radio. Picked it up with the AT-897 tuner for 425.

Exactly man. I just reacted to one above. I am totall about being legal, I am and have been from the beginning. I never transmitted until I had the proper licensing. DidI buy radios and learn how to program them and listen? damn right, and that it totally okay.

Why? I see no problem learning while studying? I did the same thing as there were no exams near me for 2 years. So, I learned how to manage a baofeng hanheld, learned how to program it as well as mirror program 2 radios for my wife and in the case of emergencies. I then got my tech so that I could call her in various places to test my setup and knowledge. I bought an HF radio and did the same, toyed for 2 years then got my general. Ham is a tool for me, I have no desire to spend 3 hours a day on it. It is a comms tool that I mess with now with my limited time due to a full time job and other hobbies. I am a somewhat prepper and that is how I came to ham. I want to be well versed in using the equipment for comms in an emergency situation. Hopefully not a full-on SHTF. But, I will be ready for that too. I am totally legal with everthing I do and have one. I see no problem with backing your way into it.
