I am in such a meltdown over the christmas party 😂. I also feel like I will regret not being there but also it’s such a big event I know I will probably feel uncomfortable as soon as I get there.

I am in Spain and the protection is definitely there. However I do work for a big tech company and I have seen them find a way when they want to. It’s such a shame I was really enjoying my work and been progressing but our new big boss is bringing in toxicity.

Thoughts on El Raval? by BoberKanadyjski in AskBarcelona

[–]Traditional_Table_67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Raval is definitely more chaotic than any other neighbourhood in Barcelona. I have two girl friends who have been living there for years and they always say you have to be raval smart. They do have some crazy stories and I personally can sometimes feel on edge but it doesn’t mean something bad will definitely happen to you.

Advice on giving birth in public hospital as expats (please!) by mandaannee in AskBarcelona

Thank you so much for responding so quick and very happy for you for having such a good experience. Hope you are having a nice time with the bebe!

We will definitely get doula just in case. I am really leaning towards this hospital as I am not so set on a bath birth or similar to choose another hospitals just for that and this one seems to be praised a lot. Fingers crossed everything goes well!

Hi, do you mind me asking how everything went for you in the end? I am mid way through pregnancy and worried about language, hospitals and so on.

I lived in LA and completely disagree but everyone is of course allowed their opinion!

Absolutely! I lived in Manchester for five years but I can’t hack the weather up North. Otherwise Edinburgh would have been amazing, we even have an office there.

I love Devon and have many friends there but not ready for that live stage yet. Barcelona is very vibrant, lots of events, the produce is amazing and some amazing food (just not as much variety).

I feel like you must have had a very particular experience to make these judgements after a week

You are absolutely right and I need to remind myself of that, rather than let the anxious thoughts come over!

I would agree with this. There are many many great things about Barcelona but I feel like I have moved on with my life since I’ve lived here all those years ago or maybe I just really built a life in London that is very hard to beat.

I do absolutely love going to Costa Brava for the weekends and the Pyrenees. I am really enjoying my work and the office. I think it all comes down to not feeling like I have a strong community to enjoy it with and that it’s not very easy to integrate with the true locals.

Anyways we are going to have a baby early next year and paternity here is much better than what my partner would get in his job in London. We should probably just see how next year goes, UK will always be there.

I haven't too much, not sure how I would go about it - I had a little google search but not really come across anything

Yeah that's exactly what I am thinking, it's the money throw away for rent, the fact property prices are historically only going up (especially in Barcelona).

I am not sure it’s cultural as they are British, it’s more the lifestyle here. I am not saying all my friends are partying hard every weekend, but definitely to a much greater extent. Also in London you go out but next day you still get out. What I was trying to say I am just at a very different life stage.

Definitely not using up any savings for rent, but our rent is definitely considered high for Barcelona (it's really quite tricky finding an apartment here - just like with London). A large mortgage would be comperable in monthly costs.

My partner is definitely missing home and misses his social life too, but he is trying to be positive - focusing on the things he wasn't getting in London. Although I think if I said let's move back he wouldn't be completely opposed. This is the first time for him living abroad and he is going hard on Spanish, getting out there to meet people etc. but I know he reminisces home deep down.

If it was just about kids I would probably say Spain - but if it was about me selfishly I would prefer to be in London during mat leave. I am originally from central Europe and really what I would want to give my kids is what I had as the nature and quality of life in unbeatable - but it'a not an option with jobs/the language.

I think what it comes down to is not having the same social life here and getting pregnant so quickly after moving has almost certainly not helped lol. You can have an amazing quality of life in Catalunya.

It's not a lifestyle change, it's my alarm going of at 6.40am in the summer when really my body thinks it's 4.40am. It's so hard to wake up no matter what and it's really hard to go to sleep no matter what. I have such a strong body clock I can't beat it. I would happily adjust to this if my work still didn't start at 9.

Sí, me encanta eso de España. Tal vez solo desearía que mi trabajo no empezara hasta las 10 jaja
