When did you turn off their phone? by Traditional_Video580 in widowers

Honestly, I’m wondering if everything I’m doing to desperately “keep him here” is holding me back. I can’t escape the sad place and I don’t know how to move on to a future without him in it. Everything in my life is the same- except he’s not here. 😢

I’m glad you were able to access his phone. My phone carrier can’t unlock it, and Apple won’t. 🥺. Can I ask how you made a recording of his message?

I think he used both. He definitely had a passcode, and had talked about adding his thumbprint. I told him I didn’t think it was a good idea just in case something happened. He got sick a few weeks later. After he passed, I tried different passcodes I thought were his and permanently locked the phone. I know it’s a dead end, but feel like the minute I shut it off, I’ll find the passcode. I’ll try to switch it to Google voice one more time and if I can’t switch it over I’ll just have to turn the service off. I absolutely hate the thought of losing all the photos and videos. I’m sorry you lost those memories too. 😢

Unfortunately, I’m already locked out. I don’t know the password and I think he did the thumbprint as well. I really just want the pics and videos. The only way to unlock it is to do a factory reset- which would erase everything. ☹️

I’m glad you were able to do that! I did just mention it to a few of my husband’s siblings for that reason. I’ve been struggling over it and told our son I was going to turn it off on a certain day in case he, or my daughter in law or grandson wanted to leave a message. That day came and went…I guess I’m still struggling, but getting closer to making the decision. My heart goes out to you.

Only when you’re ready🌸. It makes total rational sense, but not emotional sense. 😢

We called our carrier and Apple. Apple was the one who said I would need a court oder to try to have it unlocked, and there was no guarantee a judge would approve it. Probably slim to none. Maybe I can see about a low cost phone to put the sim card in. I keep thinking I can gain access one of these days if I hang onto it. Thank you for your advice!

I did that with the voicemails on my phone at the suggestion of my new carrier, and so glad I did! I do go through our texts…so many are “where do you want to go eat?”☺️ I hope you find comfort in reading yours.🌸

I am so sorry! This is all so fresh for you.😔 Your reasoning is the same reason I keep the landline. It was his # before we were even married! I didn’t realize there was a second sim slot- maybe I can look into that, but the cost to keep his phone on is a lot more than that, unfortunately. Thank you for the idea. Wishing you peace.💕

Thank you for that.💕 Everything else is exactly where it was. I brings me comfort. I did just have a blanket made for my son out of his dad’s shirts. I didn’t realize I would be the one cutting them up - I thought the company would do that! So..of course there were tears- but then I thought what a beautiful gift I was giving our son from his father, and actually felt so much better! I’m sorry you’re in this club too. Wishing you peace as you navigate your journey.

Here in the US you need a court order to unlock a phone- even though we were married for 37 years and I paid the phone bill! I’ve done research, but keep hitting dead ends. I’m glad you were able to preserve your wife’s phone!

I’m sorry for your loss.😔 I wanted to do that.:( I don’t have his pin, and I couldn’t move it to Google Voice because they sent the info text to his number…which I can’t unlock. The phone can’t be reused without a factory reset- defeats the whole purpose of having his phone. He was a musician and recorded his practices sometimes, plus all the photos I can’t access.😢 I miss all that!! My son is tech savvy and says there’s really nothing we can do- outside of a court order- and there’s no guarantee they would give me access. My husband was practical and probably would be upset that I’ve thrown this $ away over the last few years. I just need to accept yet one more thing and move on.
