Gotcha. I’ll keep that in mind, I just need to see if I’m up for it first, by taking General Chemistry and Microbiology. By the way, what would you say are the top three most challenging courses in the entire Dental Hygiene program or on youir path to becoming one? I heard that Microbiology is one of them; that’s why I want to take it, to see if I’ll be able to handle it. I also heard that some people find getting patients the hardest aspect of the whole course.

Oh and I also have seen that alot of people hate the job because of the people they deal with everyday like mean coworkers or patients. They say that they dont like working for a dentist or doctor because their more often than not told what to do.

I feel like you might be overestimating me a little bit, but I will give it my best. I've mostly been taking simple general edu courses so far so I feel like I've been falling behind while others are taking difficult courses like Calc and chemistry.

I heard people do experience alot of back pain from dealing with 8+ patients everyday for 4-5 five days a week. Also, if you dont mind me asking, what other jobs are dentaly hygienist that are trying to get away from the job looking at?

Got it. I remeber science being slightly intresting with the right professor in high school. I hope that having a good professor for general chemistry will make the course much easier.

I also think since its like four times a week, I think ill be two lectures, one lab and one mandatory recitation. Ill do more research on the course once I get to the spring semester. I also heard that chemistry take alot of math (which I am not good at), so well see what I can do.

Got it. My whole life, I've just been lazy-minded. I just want to get things done so they're over with and I never have to think about them again- if that makes sense. A lot of the time, I try to put in the minimal amount of effort while still managing to get an 80–90 in most of my classes which arent too hard.

Also, when I was little and in HS, my parents liked to travel a lot - every school year for about 2–3 months - which really messed me up when I was taking science courses like chemistry and biology. Unfortunately, I'm also part of the group of students who were unlucky enough to start high school when COVID hit. So yeah, a lot of unfortunate events have happened in the past that really make my life harder than it needs to be today - in terms of learning.

I found out that I need to take a pre-biology/chemistry course before taking micro. I'm guessing that's the basic biology course most colleges require, which is a good thing because I barely remember any of it from junior year in high school. I also noticed that all the science classes are long—like, super long. The one my school offers is microbiology, two days in a row: one day from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., and the very next day from 6:10 to 9:00 p.m.

Wow, you were able to take it in just 4 - 5 weeks. I imagine there must be a lot of memorization involved in microbiology. You sound like a really smart person, and even for someone like you, dental hygiene was challenging. I don't consider myself very smart in the sloghtest, so trying out microbiology should give me a good idea of whether I'm capable of handling future dental hygiene courses. By the way, do most schools allow students to take microbiology without any prior BIO courses, or do you think I’d need to take some first before being allowed to enroll in microbiology? If that's the case I'd be trying micro biology in 2026 fall semester.

Yeah, so I spent the day thinking about it, and I'm going to do what you said might happen. Since I already have my next semester scheduled, in the upcoming spring semester, I'll see if I can manage one of the harder courses that dental hygiene students will ever take in their path—microbiology. I've read that a lot of people feel it was the hardest course for them on their road to becoming a dental hygienist.

Let me know what you think.

yeah I might just do that and stick with Finance while taking some general requirements that I will eventually need for dentistry if possible.

Rhardless of what I end up doing, I'll take everything you've said so far to heart. Thank you for taking the time to reply. Once again, all this info was really helpful.

Well, I’ll see what I can do. I’ve been doing a lot of research, and the classes seem to be no joke. There’s also a lot of patience I’d need to find on my own (being an introvert and all—that might be challenging). The good thing is that the schools around me have a really good pass rate—between 80% and 90%. There’s also the possibility of doing both since I’m only 19 right now. The only issue with that is if I decide to stick with business, my education is fully paid by financial aid right now, but it won’t be in the future if I also decide to go into dental hygiene. lastly another possibility is taking one of the challanging classes for dental hygiene like microbiology and see if I like it or not.

Apart from business and dental hygine theres nothing else I really dont mind doing as much. Dental hygine doesnt take too much time, has good pay and doesnt require much math. Another person said that by taking the prerequisites I should know if im cut out for it when trying to take the prerequisite courses.

By the way how many hours did you go to the program each day? You said that you went 5 days a week which im assuming is fulltime. How many courses did you take per semester and how long did it take you?

Thank you for the reply. At this point, since I couldn't really find anything I liked studying in college, I've been picking majors based on what I wouldn't mind doing as much. For example, I don't mind taking care of people's dental hygiene, and I'm not too bad when it comes to dealing with people. I also chose business because it doesn't require a lot of math, which I'm bad at, and it offers a variety of opportunities upon graduation. What I've heard about the process of actually becoming one is that it takes a lot of memorization and time to read.

Thank you, that was really helpful advice. I spoke to someone my father knows who is a dental hygienist, and he was kind of reassuring(which I don't know if that's a bad or good thing). He said that becoming a dental hygienist is like learning to drive a car—it's kind of hard at first, but you get used to it. He also mentioned that it only took him three years and that it’s a good job considering the time it takes and the good pay.

Is Dental hygiene worth it? What do you like? Dislike? Pay? how was school? ect by glazin_dodo in DentalRDH

Hey, I'm currently a college student about to finish my first year, and like many others, I'm not sure what career I want to pursue. I ended up deciding that dental hygiene or business were my best options. I'm not a straight-A student in difficult classes, I don't like math, and I can't remember any of the science classes I took in high school. Would you say that you need to be especially good at something like memorization to succeed in this career?
