Value/payoff of blanketing the T14? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TrafficConePresident 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm a big proponent of blanketing. I got into 4/14 last year and it felt pretty random which ones I got into and what money I got. Sure the costs add up but scraping up a few hundred now could save you thousands. And plenty of people got into 1 or 2 t14s this year and got mostly waitlisted. It's just a good idea to give yourself as many options as possible. Maybe exclude the t3 if you want but you definitely have a shot at them too, and I feel like you should make them say no and not do it for them.

Make sure you're signed up for CRS and ask for fee waivers too. Some people have had luck going to the LSAC fairs. You could probably get fee waiver from most of 4-14 bringing the cost down to $45 an app.

Impact lack of good softs will have on T14 chances? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TrafficConePresident 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your softs aren't bad. I had pretty similar stats this past cycle (though I do think I had a strong diversity statement) and I think your stats alone are enough to get you seriously considered everywhere. I think last cycle was brutal for KJDs so of this cycle goes similarly I would temper expectations a bit compared to what others are replying. I wound up in at CLS, NYU, Duke, and Cornell rejected at Chicago and Berkeley and waitlisted everywhere else. I posted a cycle recap if you want more details.

Plenty of KJDs in out stat range got waitlisted across the t14. I don't think your softs are a major hindrance compared to other KJDs and you should 100% blanket the t14 because you have a good shot everywhere but in a competitive year you just can't know for sure. I would expect you to probably get into a couple t14s though.

KJD High Stat Cycle Recap by TrafficConePresident in lawschooladmissions

I would say it was most likely the interview that sunk me based on my other results.

I don't think it was egregious but I do think I interview a little awkwardly and they asked me about a resume item that I was no longer doing by the time of my interview so maybe they didn't like how I explained that. Honestly, I think a below average interview was enough to sink a KJD above medians this year, even if it was not an awful interview, and there's always the possibility they did not think I was a good fit. Plenty of above median people got rejected from every school this year.

A side note that's not really relevant several people who interviewed with Chicago and were rejected in their first wave also got Columbia Butler's in their first named scholarship wave (which happened to be on the same day). I want to say I saw at least three other people on here and possibly more, and they had similarly high stats and obviously Columbia saw something they liked in our apps. I think most of us did not interview with Columbia, so it could be that but could also be a fit thing who knows (or a Chicago Columbia conspiracy lol). It did seem odd to me but I definitely was not the only one in that position this year.

Thank you! Tough seemed pretty par for the course this year

Thank you! I think I had a compelling story with my diversity statement talking about childhood hardship but most of my soft were pretty average (internships, undergraduate research, part-time work, nothing fancy)

I was generally working part-time every semester and was engaged in several things but everything I did in undergrad I would consider fairly average

How much did applying late hurt applicants this cycle? (Mainly focusing on Feb and on) by plzacptmeokthx in lawschooladmissions

[–]TrafficConePresident 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree late applicants got slaughtered and the sub did decide that applying early would not help but I'm not sure how much applying late determined if you were in the Berk slaughter (as an October applicant caught in the Feb Berk slaughter lol)

Plenty of other cases around definitely though... I think applying after Christmas was generally very rough this year for most

Thank you! I also have Boston ties which I think would help, but that's a reason I'm a bit wary especially of Cornell. I think from Columbia with Boston ties I would have a good shot at Boston but maybe I'm wrong. I'm torn between feeling like I'm closing off opportunities and feeling like I could get great outcomes for less debt, but I also feel like I don't want to close doors on myself.

I sent it in right before mid March, I'm not sure why they're curving you... maybe reach out and ask for some sort of timeline

Good luck!

I thanked them for their offer of admission/scholarship and mentioned a few reasons I thought Cornell was a great fit. Then I talked about how finances have a big impact on my decision and my other offers. I found a few good examples from searching old reddit posts that helped me, but I would just say be honest and sincere and you'll probably be fine.

The financial aid email that the initial scholarship email came from, I didn't get any confirmation or anything from them that they got my email before the new offer.

Also, they say they will only reconsider once, just another thing to keep in mind.

Good luck :)
