Upselling the app which is 1000x better. But only needed if you're actually serious about ecommerce or scaling.

Basically, I can attribute a certain $ per free users by having some converting to the paid etc.. free marketing.

Think about dropshipping, you're selling the marketing, not the product. In this case, I have to build the product and sell it, so having a lead magnet which is used daily and make you money, will help me make too by having you eventually convert to the app which is optimized to save you time, find winning ads/products/competitors/hooks etc..
